The Steppe Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCD EFBG HGIG JKLK MNOP GKQR LSLK KTKU KVKV

How lovely those journeys into quietA
Boundless the steppe like a seascapeB
ants rustle and the feather grass sighsC
mosquitoes go whining through spaceD
-
The hayricks line up with the cloudsE
volcano after volcano they fadeF
Grown silent damp the boundless steppeB
you drift you re buffeted you swayG
-
The mist overtakes us washes a seaH
and burrs are clinging to stockings todayG
it s lovely to tramp the steppe s shoreI
you drift you re buffeted you swayG
-
Is that a rick in the mist Who knowsJ
Is that one ours Yes it s foundK
There Yes that s it all right thoughL
The rick and the mist and the steppe all roundK
-
And the Milky Way slants towards KerchM
like a path that cattle have stamped onN
Go past the houses you ll lose your breathO
on every side broad broad horizonsP
-
Shadowy midnight stands by the wayG
strewn with stars that touch every verstK
and you can t cross it beyond the fenceQ
without trampling the universeR
-
When did the stars sweep down so lowL
midnight sink so deep in tall grassS
and drenched muslin afraid aglowL
long for a d nouement at lastK
-
Let the steppe judge and night decideK
When if not in the BeginningT
did Mosquitoes whine Ants rideK
and Burrs go clinging to stockingsU
-
Close them my darling Or go blindK
The whole steppe s as before the FallV
All drowned in peace like a parachuteK
like a heaving vision AllV
