Ploughing Time Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHHH IJEJWhat is the matter with the landscape | A |
Familiar landmarks are not there | B |
Ploughed fields like squares upon a chessboard | C |
Today are scattered everywhere | B |
- | |
The newly harrowed vast expanses | D |
So evenly are spread about | E |
As though the valley had been spring cleaned | F |
Or else the mountains flattened out | E |
- | |
And that same day in one endeavour | G |
Outside the furrows every tree | H |
Bursts into leaf light green and downy | H |
And stretches skyward tall and free | H |
- | |
No speck of dust on the new maples | I |
And colours nowhere are as clean | J |
As is the light grey of the ploughland | E |
And as the silver birch's green | J |
