Here will be echoes in the mountainsA
The distant landslides' rumbling boomB
The rocks the dwellings in the villageC
The sorry little inn the gloomB

Of something black beyond the TerekD
Clouds moving heavily Up thereE
The day was breaking very slowlyF
It dawned but light was nowhere nearG
-
One sensed the heaviness of darknessH
For miles ahead around KazbekD
Wound on the heights though some were tryingD
To throw the halter from their neckD
-
As if cemented in an ovenI
In the strange substance of a dreamJ
A pot of poisoned food the regionI
Of Daghestan there slowly steamedK
-
Its towering peaks towards us rollingD
All black from top to foot it strainedL
To meet our car if not with clashingD
Of daggers then with pouring rainM
-
The mountains were preparing troubleN
The handsome giants fierce and blackD
Each one more evil than the otherO
Were closing down upon our trackD
