For Three Whose Reflex Was Yes Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBCDEADBFGHIBBBJKLM NKO

Nobody I know is a god A mother and sonA
fall into the river's million hands the river'sB
smash and grab They go under climb the ropelessB
water up wave open their mouths and screamC
wet silences as they slide back underD
A man jumps in to save them leaves the edgeE
as a needle into the river's muddy sinews a womanA
jumps in to save his vanishing and the motherD
and son and is stripped by the flood her pantsB
drowning right beside her another man jumps inF
to save them all and a woman jumps in after himG
to save them all plus one cars arrive and peopleH
get out and leap into the river the river's being filledI
with whatever's in their pockets and their handsB
and their eyes with nickels and dollar billsB
and bibles and sunsets the beautiful brush strokesB
of this beautifully dying day people pileJ
like a river inside the river they keep comingK
and diving in they keep feeding their breathL
to the water which is less which is thinnedM
until the mother and son rise on a moundN
of strangers and dead the sun warming them blessingK
their faces slowly dryO
