We were young and it was an accomplishmentB
to have a body No one said this No oneC
said much beyond throw me that sky orD
can the lake sleep over The lake could notE
The lake was sent home and I ate too manyF
beets went around with beet blood tongueG
worrying about my draft card burning brotherH
going to war Other brothers became holesI
at first base at war then a few holesI
Harleying back from war in their alwaysJ
it seemed green jackets with pockets galoreD
and flaps for I wondered bullets I wonderedK
how to worship these giants None of themL
wanted to talk to me or anyone it seemedM
but the river or certain un helmeted curvesN
at high speed I had my bodyF
and flung it over branches and fencesO
toward my coming sullenness as the gravityF
of girls hips began and my brotherH
marched off to march against the warD
I watched different masses of bodies on TVF
people saying no to the jungle with grenadesP
and people saying no to the grenades with signsQ
and my father saying no to all of themL
with the grinding of his teeth he spoke withR
I d pedal after the nos up and down a hillS
like it was somehow a rosary somehow my bodyF
was a prayer I could chant by letting it looseT
with others like me milling aroundU
the everything below five feet tallV
that was ours the everything belowW
the adult line of sight that was oursX
to hold as long as we could a yearY
a summer Until the quarterback came backZ
without well without When the next AdonisA2
stepped up to throw the bombB2
