I called a man today After he saidA
hello and I said hello came a pauseB
during which it would have beenC
-
confusing to say hello again so I saidA
how are you doing and guess what he saidA
fine and wondered aloud how I wasD
-
and it turns out I m OK HeE
was on the couch watching carsF
painted with ads for Budweiser follow carsF
-
painted with ads for Tide around an ovalG
that s a metaphor for life becauseB
most of us run out of gas and settleG
-
for getting drunk in the standsH
and shouting at someone in a t shirtI
we want kraut on our dog I saidA
-
he could have his job back and duringJ
the pause that followed his whiskersK
scrubbed the mouthpiece cleanL
-
and his breath passed in and outM
in the tidal fashion popularN
with mammals until he broke throughO
-
with the words how soon thank youO
ohmyGod which crossed his lips and droveP
through the wires on the backs of ionsQ
-
as one long word as one hard prayerR
of relief meant to be heardS
by the sky When he began to cry I triedT
-
with the shape of my silence to sayU
I understood but each confessionV
of fear and poverty was more awkwardS
-
than what you learn in the showerN
After he hung up I went outside and satW
with one hand in the bower of the otherN
-
and thought if I turn my head to the leftX
it changes the song of the orioleY
and if I give a job to one stomach otherN
-
forks are naked and if tonight a steakZ
sizzles in his kitchen do the sevenV
other people staring at their phonesA2
-
hearB2
