And Yanna by the yule logA
Sat in the empty hallB
And watched the goblin firelightC
Caper upon the wallB
-
The goblins of the hearthstoneD
Who teach the wind to singE
Who dance the frozen yule awayF
And usher back the springE
-
The goblins of the NorthlandC
Who teach the gulls to screamG
Who dance the autumn into dustC
The ages into dreamG
-
Like the tall corn was YannaD
Bending and smooth and fairH
His Yanna of the sea gray eyesI
And harvest yellow hairH
-
Child of the low voiced peopleJ
Who dwell among the hillsK
She had the lonely calm and poiseL
Of life that waits and willsK
-
Only to night a littleJ
With grave regard she smiledC
Remembering the morn she wokeM
And ceased to be a childC
-
Outside the ghostly rampikesK
Those armies of the moonD
Stood while the ranks of stars drew onD
To that more spacious noonD
-
While over them in silenceK
Waved on the dusk afarN
The gold flags of the Northern lightC
Streaming with ancient warO
-
And when below the headlandC
The riders of the foamP
Up from the misty border rodeC
The wild gray horses homeP
-
And woke the wintry mountainsK
With thunder on the shoreO
Out of the night there came a weirdC
And cried at Yanna's doorO
-
O Yanna AdriannaD
They buried me awayF
In the blue fathoms of the deepQ
Beyond the outer bayF
-
But in the yule O YannaD
Up from the round dim seaK
And reeling dungeons of the fogR
I am come back to theeK
-
The wind slept in the forestC
The moon was white and highS
Only the shifting snow awokeM
To hear the yule guest cryS
-
O Yanna Yanna YannaD
Be quick and let me inD
For bitter is the trackless wayF
And far that I have beenD
-
Then Yanna by the yule logA
Starts from her dream to hearT
A voice that bids her brooding heartC
Shudder with joy and fearU
-
The wind is up a momentC
And whistles at the eavesK
And in his troubled iron dreamG
The ocean moans and heavesK
-
She trembles at the door lockV
That he is come againD
And frees the wooden bolt for oneD
No barrier could detainD
-
O Garvin bonny GarvinD
So late so late you comeW
The yule log crumbles down and throwsK
Strange figures on the gloomX
-
But in the moonlight pouringE
Through the half open doorO
Stands the gray guest of yule and castsK
No shadow on the floorO
-
The change that is upon himY
She knows not in her hasteC
About him her strong arms with gladC
Impetuous tears are lacedC
-
She's led him to the firesideC
And set the wide oak chairH
And with her warm hands brushed awayF
The sea rime from his hairH
-
O Garvin I have waitedC
Have watched the red sun sinkZ
And clouds of sail come flocking inD
Over the world's gray brinkZ
-
With stories of encounterA2
On plank and mast and sparN
But never the brave barque I launchedC
And waved across the barN
-
How come you so unsignalledC
When I have watched so wellB2
Where rides the AdriannaD
With my name on boat and bellB2
-
O Yanna golden YannaD
The Adrianna liesK
With the sea dredging through her portsK
The white sand through her eyesK
-
And strange unearthly creaturesK
Make marvel of her hullJ
Where far below the gulfs of stormC2
There is eternal lullJ
-
O Yanna AdriannaD
This midnight I am hereT
Because one night of all my lifeD2
At yule tide of the yearU
-
With the stars white in heavenD
And peace upon the seaK
With all my world in your white armsK
You gave yourself to meK
-
For that one night my YannaD
Within the dying yearU
Was it not well to love and nowD
Can it be well to fearU
-
O Garvin there is heartacheE2
In tales that are half toldC
But ah thy cheek is pale to nightC
And thy poor hands are coldC
-
Tell me the course the voyageF2
The ports and the new starsK
Did the long rollers make green surfG2
On the white reefs and barsK
-
O Yanna AdriannaD
Though easily I foundC
The set of those uncharted tidesK
In seas no line could soundC
-
And made without a pilotC
The port without a lightC
No log keeps tally of the knotsK
That I have sailed to nightC
-
It fell about mid AprilJ
The Trades were holding freeK
We drove her till the scuppers hissedC
And buried in the leeK
-
O Yanna AdriannaD
Loose hands and let me goH2
The night grows red along the EastC
And in the shifting snowH2
-
I hear my shipmates callingE
Sent out to search for meK
In the pale lands beneath the moonD
Along the troubling seaK
-
O Garvin bonny GarvinD
What is the booming soundC
Of canvas and the piping shrillI2
As when a ship comes roundC
-
It is the shadow boatswainD
Piping his hands to bendC
The looming sails on giant yardsK
Aboard the NomansfriendC
-
She sails for Sunken HarborA2
And ports of yester yearU
The tern are shrilling in the liftC
The low wind gates are clearU
-
O Yanna AdriannaD
The little while is doneD
Thou wilt behold the brightening seaK
Freshen before the sunD
-
And many a morning reddenD
The dark hill slopes of pineD
But I must sail hull down to nightC
Below the gray sea lineD
-
I shall not hear the snowbirdsK
Their morning litanyK
For when the dawn comes over daleJ2
I must put out to seaK
-
O Garvin bonny GarvinD
To have thee as I willI2
I would that never more on earthK2
The dawn came over hillI2
-
Then on the snowy pillowH2
Her hair about her faceK
He laid her in the quiet roomX
And wiped away all traceK
-
Of tears from the poor eyelidsK
That were so sad for himY
And soothed her into sleep at lastC
As the great stars grew dimY
-
Tender as April twilightC
He sang and the song grewL2
Vague as the dreams which roam aboutC
This world of dust and dewL2
-
O Yanna AdriannaD
Dear Love look forth to seaK
And all year long until the yuleM2
Dear Heart keep watch for meK
-
O Yanna AdriannaD
I hear the calling seaK
And the folk telling tales amongN2
The hills where I would beK
-
O Yanna AdriannaD
Over the hills of seaK
The wind calls and the morning comesK
And I must forth from theeK
-
But Yanna AdriannaD
Keep watch above the seaK
And when the weary time is o'erA2
Dear Life come back to meK
-
O Garvin bonny GarvinD
She murmurs in her dreamG
And smiles a moment in her sleepQ
To hear the white gulls screamG
-
Then with the storm forebodingE
Far in the dim gray SouthO2
He kissed her not upon the cheekP2
Nor on the burning mouthO2
-
But once above the foreheadC
Before he turned awayF
And ere the morning light stole inD
That golden lock was grayF
-
O Yanna AdriannaD
The wind moans to the seaK
And down the sluices of the dawnD
A shadow drifts aleeM2
