Smile you inland hills and riversA
Flush you mountains in the dawnB
But my roving heart is seawardC
With the ships of gray St JohnD
-
Fair the land lies full of AugustE
Meadow island shingly barF
Open barns and breezy twilightG
Peace and the mild evening starF
-
Gently now this gentlest countryH
The old habitude takes onD
But my wintry heart is outboundI
With the great ships of St JohnD
-
Once in your wide arms you held meH
Till the man child was a manJ
Canada great nurse and motherK
Of the young sea roving clanJ
-
Always your bright face above meH
Through the dreams of boyhood shoneL
Now far alien countries call meH
With the ships of gray St JohnD
-
Swing you tides up out of FundyI
Blow you white fogs in from seaH
I was born to be your fellowM
You were bred to pilot meH
-
At the touch of your strong fingersA
Doubt the derelict is goneB
Sane and glad I clear the headlandI
With the white ships of St JohnD
-
Loyalists my fathers buildedI
This gray port of the gray seaH
When the duty to idealsN
Could not let well being beH
-
When the breadth of scarlet buntingO
Puts the wreath of maple onD
I must cheer too slip my mooringsP
With the ships of gray St JohnD
-
Peerless hearted port of heroesQ
Be a word to lift the worldI
Till the many see the signalR
Of the few once more unfurledI
-
Past the lighthouse past the nunbuoyH
Past the crimson rising sunS
There are dreams go down the harborK
With the tall ships of St JohnD
-
In the morning I am with themT
As they clear the island barF
Fade till speck by speck the middayI
Has forgotten where they areF
-
But I sight a vaster sea lineU
Wider lee way longer runS
Whose discoverers return notI
With the ships of gray St JohnD
