Out through the hills of midnightA
Hurtling and thundering onB
-
The night express from the outer worldC
Speeds for the open of dawnD
-
Out of the past and gloom wrackE
Out of the dim and yoreF
Freighted as train or caravanG
Was never freighted beforeF
-
Built when the Sphinx's queryH
Was new on the lips of peaceI
Hurled through the aching and hollow yearsJ
Till time shall have releaseI
-
Stealing and swift as a shadowK
Sinuous urging and blindL
Unpent as a joy or the flight of a birdM
With oblivion behindL
-
Down to the morrow countryH
Into the unknown landN
And the Driver grips the throttle barO
Our lives are in his handN
-
The sleeping hills awakeP
A tremor a dread a roarF
The terror is flying is come is pastQ
The hills can sleep once moreF
-
A moment the silence throbsI
The dark has a pulse of fireR
And then the wonder of time is goneD
A wraith and a desireR
-
Demonish toiling grimS
In the ruddy furnace flareT
While the Driver fingers the throttle barO
Who stands at his elbow thereT
-
Can it be this thing like a shredU
Of the firmament torn awayV
Is a boarded train that Death and his crewW
Consorted to waylayV
-
His wreckers grinning and leanX
Are lurking at every curveY
But the Driver plays with the throttle barO
He has the iron nerveY
-
We are travelling safe and warmZ
With our little baggage of caresI
Why tease the peril that yet would comeA2
Unbidden and unawaresI
-
The lonely are lonely stillB2
And the friend has another friendC2
Only the idle heart inquiresI
The distance and the endC2
-
We pant up the climbing gradeD2
And coast on the tangent mileE2
While the Driver toys with the throttle barO
And gathers the track in his smileE2
-
The dreamer weary of dreamsI
The lover by love releasedF2
Stricken and whole and eager and sadG2
Beauty and waif and priestF2
-
All these adventure forthH2
Strangers though side by sideI2
With the tramp of time in the roaring wheelsI
And haste in their shadowy strideI2
-
The star that races the hillsI
Shows yet the night is deepJ2
But the Driver humors the throttle barO
So you and I may sleepJ2
-
For He of the sleepless handN
Will drive till the night is doneK2
Will watch till morning springs from the seaI
And the rails stand gold in the sunK2
-
Then he will slow to a stopL2
The tread of the driving rodM2
When the night express rolls into the dawnD
For the Driver's name is GodM2
