On the long slow heave of a lazy seaA
To the flap of an idle sailB
The Nancy's Pride went out on the tideC
And the skipper stood by the railB
-
All down all down by the sleepy townD
With the hollyhocks a rowE
In the little poppy gardensF
The sea had her in towE
-
They let her slip by the breathing ripG
Where the bell is never stillH
And over the sounding harbor barI
And under the harbor hillH
-
She melted into the dreaming noonJ
Out of the drowsy landK
In sight of a flag of goldy hairL
To the kiss of a girlish handK
-
For the lass who hailed the lad who sailedM
Was who but his April brideC
And of all the fleet of Grand LatiteC
Her pride was the Nancy's PrideC
-
So the little vessel faded downD
With her creaking boom a swingN
Till a wind from the deep came up with a creepO
And caught her wing and wingN
-
She made for the lost horizon lineP
Where the clouds a castled layQ
While the boil and seethe of the open seaA
Hung on her frothing wayQ
-
She lifted her hull like a breasting gullR
Where the rolling valleys beA
And dipped where the shining porpoisesS
Put ploughshares through the seaA
-
A fading sail on the far sea lineP
About the turn of the tideC
As she made for the Banks on her maiden cruiseT
Was the last of the Nancy's PrideC
-
To day a boy with goldy hairL
In a garden of Grand LatiteC
From his mother's knee looks out to seaA
For the coming of the fleetC
-
They all may home on a sleepy tideC
To the flap of the idle sailB
But it's never again the Nancy's PrideC
That answers a human hailB
-
They all may home on a sleepy tideC
To the sag of an idle sheetC
But it's never again the Nancy's PrideC
That draws men down the streetC
-
On the Banks to night a fearsome sightC
The fishermen beholdC
Keeping the ghost watch in the moonJ
When the small hours are coldC
-
When the light wind veers and the white fog clearsU
They see by the after railB
An unknown schooner creeping upV
With mildewed spar and sailB
-
Her crew lean forth by the rotting shroudsW
With the Judgment in their faceX
And to their mates' God save youY
Have never a word of graceX
-
Then into the gray they sheer awayQ
On the awful polar tideC
And the sailors know they have seen the wraithZ
Of the missing Nancy's PrideC
