I cannotA
quite recallB
When first he cameC
So reticent and tallB
With his eyes of flameC
-
The neighbors used to sayD
They know so muchE
He looked to them half wayD
Spanish or DutchE
-
Outlandish certainlyF
He is and queerG
He has been lodged with meF
This thirty yearG
-
All the while it seems absurdH
We hardly haveI
Exchanged a single wordH
Mum as the graveJ
-
Minds only his own affairsK
Goes out and inL
And keeps himself upstairsK
With his violinL
-
Mum did I say And yetM
That talking smileN
You never can forgetM
Is all the whileN
-
Full of such sweet reproofsK
The darkest dayD
Like morning on the roofsK
In flush of MayD
-
Like autumn on the hillsK
At four o'clockO
The sun like a herdsman spillsK
For drove and flockO
-
Peace with their provenderG
And they are fedP
The day without a stirG
Lies warm and redP
-
Ah sir the summer landQ
For me That isK
Like living in God's handQ
Compared to thisK
-
His smile so quiet and deepR
Reminds me of itS
I see it in my sleepR
And so I love itS
-
An anarchist say someT
But tush say IU
When a man's heart is plumbT
Can his life be awryU
-
Better than charityF
And bigger tooV
That heart You've seen the seaF
Of course To youV
-
'T is common enough no doubtW
But here in townX
With God's world all shut outW
Save the leaden frownX
-
Of the sky a slant of rainY
And a straggling starG
Such memories remainY
The wonders they areG
-
Once at the Isles of ShoalsK
And it was JuneZ
Now hear me dote He strollsK
Across my noonZ
-
Like the sun that day where sleepsK
My soul his gazeK
Goes glimmering down my deepsK
Of yesterdaysK
-
Searching and searching tillA2
Its light consumesK
The reluctant shapes that fillA2
Those purple gloomsK
-
Let others applaud defameC
And the noise die downX
His voice saying your nameC
Is enough renownX
-
Too patient pitifulB2
Too fierce at wrongC2
To patronize the dullB2
Or praise the strongC2
-
And yet he has a soulD2
Of wrath though pentE2
Even when that white ghoulF2
Comes for his rentE2
-
The landlord Hush My GodG2
I think the wallsK
Take notes to help him prodG2
Us up He gallsK
-
My very soul to strifeH2
With his death's head faceK
He is foul too in his lifeH2
Some hid disgraceK
-
Some secret thing he doesK
I warrant youV
For all his cheek to usK
Is shaved so blueV
-
He takes good care by the shadeI2
Of seven wivesK
That the undertaker's tradeI2
He lives by thrivesK
-
Nor chick nor child has heF
So servile smugJ2
With that cringe in his kneeF
God curse his lugJ2
-
But him you should have seenK2
Him yesterdayD
The landlord's smirk turned greenK2
At his smile The wayD
-
He served that bloodless fishL2
Were like to freeze himM2
But meeting elsewhere pishL2
He never sees himM2
-
Yet such a gentlemanN2
So sure and slowO2
The vilest harridanN2
Is not too lowO2
-
If there is pity's needP2
And no man bornN2
For cruelty or greedP2
Escapes that scornN2
-
Most of all things it seemsK
He loves the townN2
Watching the bright faced streamsK
Go up and downN2
-
I have surprised him oftenN2
On Tremont streetQ2
And marked the grave face softenN2
The mouth grow sweetQ2
-
In a brown study overG
The men and womenN2
An unsuspected roverG
That for our CommonN2
-
When the first jonquils comeT
And spring is soldR2
On the street corners someT
Of the pretty goldR2
-
Is sure to find its wayD
Home in his handQ
And many a winter dayD
At some cab standQ
-
He'll watch the cabmen feedP2
The pigeon flocksK
Or bid some liner speedP2
From the icy docksK
-
His rooms I much regretM
You cannot seeF
His rooms but they were letM
With guaranteeF
-
Of his seclusion thereG
Except myselfS2
Each morning table chairG
Lamp hearth and shelfS2
-
I rearrange refreshenN2
Put all to rightsK
Then leave him in possessionN2
Ah but the nightsK
-
The nights Sir if I daredT2
But once set eyeU
To keyhole nor be scaredT2
From playing Paul PryU
-
I doubt not I should learnN2
A wondrous thingU2
Or two and in returnN2
Go blind till springU2
-
The light under his doorG
Is glory enoughV2
It outshines any starG
That I know ofW2
-
Wirrah my lad my ladX2
'T is fearsome strangeY2
The hints we all have hadX2
Passing the rangeY2
-
Of science knowledge lawZ2
Or what you willA2
Whose intangible touch of aweA3
Makes reason nilA2
-
Many a night I startB3
Sudden awakeC3
Feeling my smothered heartB3
Flutter and quakeC3
-
Like an aspen at dead of noonN2
When not a breathD3
Is stirring to trouble the boonN2
Valley A wraithD3
-
Or a fetch it must be shiversK
The soul of the treeF
Till every leaf of it quiversK
And so with meF
-
Was it the shuffle of feetQ2
I heard go byU
With muffled drums in the streetQ2
Was it the cryU
-
Of a rider riding the nightE3
Into ashes and dawnN2
With news in his nostrils and frightE3
Where his hoof beats had goneN2
-
Did the pipes at Bonny DundeeF
Bid regiments formF3
Did a renegade's soul get freeF
On a wail of the stormF3
-
Did a flock of wild geese honkG3
As they cleared the hillA2
Or only a bittern cronkG3
Then all was stillA2
-
Was it a night stampedeP2
Of a thousand headP
I know I shook like a reedP2
There on my bedP
-
Nameless and void and wildH3
Was the fear before meF
-
Ere I bethought me and smiledH3
As the truth flashed o'er meF
-
Of course it was only his handQ
Freeing the bassK
Of his old Amati grandQ
In the silence' faceK
-
Rummaging up and downN2
From string to stringU2
Bidding the discords drownN2
The harmonies springU2
-
Where tides and tide winds roveI3
Far out from landQ
On the ocean of music a moveJ3
At the will of his handQ
-
Sobbing and grieving nowN2
Now glad as a birdH
Thou thou thouN2
Of the joys unheardH
-
Luminous radiant seaF
Of the sounds and timeK3
Surely surely by theeF
Is eternal primeK3
-
Holy and beautiful deepR
Spread down beforeG
The imperial coming of sleepR
Endure endureG
-
And sleep be thou the rangerG
Over it wanN2
And dream be thou no strangerG
There with the dawnN2
-
Then wings of the sun go abroadL3
As a scarlet desireG
Unwearied unwaning unawedL3
To quest and aspireG
-
Till the drench of the dusk you drinkM3
In the poppy field westL3
Then veer and settle and sinkM3
As a gull to her nestL3
-
WindL3
Away awayD
And hurry your phantom kindL3
Through the gates of dayD
-
Or ever the king's dark cupN3
With its studs and sparsF
Be inverted and earth look upN3
To the shuddering starsF
-
Blaring and triumphing nowN2
Now quailing and loneN2
Thou thou thouN2
Of the joys unknownN2
-
Unknown and wild wildL3
Where the merrymen beF
Sink to sleep soul of a childL3
Slumber thou seaF
-
All this his fiddle playsF
And many a thingU2
As strange when his mood so laysF
The bow to the stringU2
-
Sleepless He never sleepsF
That I can findL3
I marvel how he keepsF
A bit of his mindL3
-
There is neither sight nor soundL3
In the world of senseF
But he has fathomed and foundL3
In the silvery tenseF
-
Keen cords on the amber woodL3
As he wrings them thenceF
Death smiles at his hardihoodL3
For recompenseF
-
Oh fair they are so fairG
No tongue can tellO3
How he sets them chiming thereG
Clear as a bellO3
-
An orchard of birds in JuneN2
The winds that streamP3
The cold sea brooks that croonN2
The storms that screamP3
-
The planets that float and swingU2
Like buoys on the tideL3
The north going legions in springU2
The hills that abideL3
-
The frigate bird clouds that rangeY2
The vagabond moonN2
That wilful lover of changeY2
And the workaday sunN2
-
Dying summer and fallB
Seasons and menN2
And herds he has them allB
In his shadowy kenN2
-
He calls and they come leaving strifeH2
Leaving discord and deathD3
Out of oblivion to lifeH2
Though its span be a breathD3
-
There they are all the beautiful thingsF
I loved and lost sight ofW2
Long since in the far away springsF
Come back for a night ofW2
-
New being as good as their oldL3
Aye better in factL3
For somehow he gilds their fine goldL3
Gives the one thing they lackedL3
-
The breath aspiration desireG
Core kindle controlD2
Memory and rapture and fireG
The touch of man's soulD2
-
How know the true master I knowN2
By my joys and my fearsF
For my heart crumbles down like the snowN2
With spring rain into tearsF
-
Now I am a precious oneN2
With nothing to doL3
But idle here in the sunN2
And gossip with youL3
-
Of a stranger you have not seenN2
As like never willA2
I would every soul had a screenN2
When the wind sets illA2
-
In the world's bleak house like thisF
Strange lodger of mineN2
His presence is worse to missF
Than sun's best shineN2
-
I put no thought at allB
Upon the endL3
If only I may callB
Such a man friendL3
-
And a friend he is heart lightL3
With love for heftL3
Proud as silence whose rightL3
Hand ignores his leftL3
-
Yes odd he gives his nameC
As SpiritusF
But that is vague as a flameC
In the wind to usF
-
And then but not a breathD3
Of this you seeF
All his effects my faithD3
Are marked D VF
-
His cape coat has a ripQ3
But for all thatL3
Folk smile suggest a dipQ3
In the dyer's vatL3
-
Those purple aldermenN2
Who roll aboutL3
In coaches drive till tenN2
And die of goutL3
-
I think he finely showsF
How learning's crumbsF
At least can rival thoseF
Of 'st here he comesF
