Wild across the Breton countryA
Fabled centuries agoB
Riding from the black sea borderC
Came the squadrons of the snowB
-
Piping dread at every latch holeD
Moaning death at every sillE
The white Yule came down in vengeanceF
Upon Ys and had its willE
-
Walled and dreamy stood the cityA
Wide and dazzling shone the seaA
When the gods set hand to smotherC
Ys the pride of BrittanyA
-
Morning drenched her towers in purpleG
Light of heart were king and foolH
Fair forebode the merrymakingB
Of the seven days of YuleH
-
Laughed the king Once more my mistressI
Time and place and joy are oneJ
Bade the balconies with bannersK
Match the splendor of the sunJ
-
Eyes of urchins shine with silverC
And with gold the pavement ringB
Bade the war horns sound their bravestL
In The Mistress of the KingB
-
Mountebanks and ballad mongersK
And all strolling traffickersK
Should block up the market cornersK
With none other name than hersK
-
Laughed the fool To day my FollyA
Thou shalt be the king of YsK
O wise fool How long must wisdomM
Under motley hold her peaceK
-
Then the storm came down The valleysK
Wailed and ciphered to the duneN
Like huge organ pipes a midnightO
Stalked those gala streets at noonN
-
And the sea rose rocked and tiltedP
Like a beaker in the handQ
Till the moon hung tide broke tetherC
And stampeded in for landQ
-
All day long with doom portentousK
Shreds of pennons shrieked and flewR
Over Ys and black fear shudderedS
On the hearthstone all night throughR
-
Fear which freezes up the marrowB
Of the heart from door to doorT
Like a plague went through the cityA
And filled up the devil's scoreT
-
Filled her tally of the cravenJ
To the sea wind's dismal noteU
While a panic superstitionJ
Took the people by the throatU
-
As with morning still the sea roseK
With vast wreckage on the tideV
And their pasture rills grown riversK
Thundered in the mountain sideV
-
Vengeance vengeance gods to vengeanceK
Rose a storm of mutteringB
And the human flood came pouringB
To the palace of the kingB
-
Save O king before we perishW
In the whirlpools of the seaA
Ys thy city us thy peopleG
Growled the king then What would yeA
-
But his wolf's eyes talked defianceK
And his bearded mouth meant scornX
O our king the gods are angryA
And no longer to be borneX
-
Is the shameless face that greets usK
From thy windows at thy sideV
Smiling infamy And thereforeT
Thou shall take her up and rideV
-
Down with her into the sea's mouthY
And there leave her else we dieZ
And thy name goes down to storyA
A new word for crueltyA
-
Ah but she was fair this womanJ
Warm and flaxen waved her hairA2
Her blue Breton eyes made summerC
In that bleak December airA2
-
There she stood whose burning beautyA
Made the world's high roof tree ringB
A white poppy tall and wind blownB2
In the garden of the kingB
-
Her throat shook but not with terrorC
Her eyes swam but not with fearC2
While her two hands caught and clung toR
The one man they had found dearC2
-
Lord and lover thus she smiled himD2
Her last word it shall be soB
Only the sea's arms shall hold meA
When from out thine arms I goB
-
Swore he By the gods my mistressK
Thou shall have queen's burialG
Pearls and amber shall thy tomb beA
Shot with gold and green thy pallE2
-
And a million throated chorusK
Shall take up thy dirge to nightO
Where thy slumber's starry watch firesK
Shall a thousand years be brightO
-
Then they brought the coal black stallionJ
Chafing on the bit AstrideV
Sprang the young king shouted Way thereA2
Caught the girl up to his sideV
-
And a path through that scared rabbleG
Rode in pageant to the seaA
And the coal black mane was mingledF2
With gold hair against his kneeA
-
Sure as the wild gulls make seawardS
From the west gate to the beachG2
Rode these two for whom now freedomM
Landward lay beyond their reachG2
-
And the great horse scenting perilG
Snorted at the flying spumeM
Flicked with courage as how oftenJ
When the tides were racing doomM
-
Ridden he had plunged to rescueR
From that seething icy hellH2
Some poor sailor wrecked a fishingB
On the coast What fears should quellH2
-
That high spirit Knee to shoulderC
King and stallion reared and sprangB
Clear above the long white combersA
And that turmoil's iron clangB
-
What a launching For a momentI2
While the tempest held its breathJ2
And a thousand eyes looked wonderC
Swimming in that trough of deathJ2
-
Steering seaward through the welterC
Ere they settled out of sightO
Waved above them one gold streamerC
Valor bid the world good nightO
-
Not a trace while the long summersA
Warm the heart of BrittanyA
Save one stone of Ys as remnantI2
For a white mark in the seaA
