The sunburnt face in the willow shadeA
To the face in the water mirror saidB
-
O deep mysterious face in the streamC
Art thou myself or am I thy dreamC
-
And the face deep down in the water's sideD
To the face in the upper air repliedD
-
I am thy dream them poor worn faceE
And this is thy heart's abiding placeE
-
Too much in the world come back and beF
Once more my dream fellow with meF
-
In the far off untarnished yearsG
Before thy furrows were washed with tearsH
-
Or ever thy serious creature eyesI
Were aged with a mist of memoriesJ
-
Hast thou forgotten the long agoK
In the garden where I used to flowK
-
Among the hills with the maple treeF
And the roses blowing over meF
-
I who am now but a wraith of this riverL
Forsaken of thee forever and everL
-
Who then was thine image fair forecastM
In the heart of the water rimpling pastM
-
Out in the wide of the summer zoneN
I lulled and allured thee apart and aloneN
-
The azure gleam and the golden croonO
And the grass with the flaky roses strewnO
-
There you would lie and lean above meF
The more you lingered the more to love meF
-
Till I became as the year grew oldP
Thy fairest day dream's fashion and mouldP
-
Deep in the water twilight thereQ
Smiling elusive wonderful fairQ
-
The beautiful visage of thy clear soulR
Set in eternity's limpid shoalR
-
Thy spirit's countenance the traceE
Of dawning God in the human faceE
-
And when yellow leaves came downS
Through the silent mornings one by oneT
-
To the frosty meadow as they fellR
Thy pondering heart said All is wellR
-
Aye all is best for I stake my lifeU
Beyond the boundaries of strife '-
-
And then thy feet returned no moreV
While years went over the garden floorV
-
With frost and maple with rose and dewW
In the world thy river wandered throughW
-
Came never again to revive and recallR
Thy youth from its water burialR
-
But now thy face is battle darkX
The strife of the world has graven a markX
-
About the lips that are no more mineY
Too sweet to forget too strong to repineY
-
With the ends of the earth for thy garden nowY
What solace and what reward hast thouY
-
Then he of the earth's sun traversed sideD
To him of the under world repliedD
-
O glad mysterious face in the streamC
My lost illusion my summer dreamC
-
Thou fairer self of a fonder timeZ
A far imperishable climeZ
-
For thy dear sake I have fared aloneY
And fronted failure and housed with noneY
-
What youth was that when the world was greenY
In the lovely mythus Greek and cleanY
-
Was doomed with his flowery kin to bideD
A blown white star by the river sideD
-
And no more follow the sun foot freeF
Too long enamoured of one like theeF
-
Shall God who abides in the patient flowerL
The painted dust sustained by his powerL
-
Refuse to the wing of the dragonflyR
His sanction over the open skyA2
-
A frail detached and wandering thingB2
Torn loose from the blossomy life of springB2
-
And this is man the myriad oneY
Dust's flower and time's ephemeronY
-
And I who have followed the wander listC2
For a glimpse of beauty a wraith in the mistC2
-
Shall be spilt at last and return to peaceD2
As dust which the hands of the wind releaseD2
-
This is my solace and my rewardE2
Who have drained life's dregs from a broken shardF2
-
Wise and grave was the water faceE
A youth grown man in a little spaceE
-
While the wayworn face by the river sideD
Grew gentler lipped and shadowy eyedD
-
For he heard like a sea horn summoning himZ
That sound from the world's end vast and dimZ
-
Where the river went wandering out so farG2
Through a gate in the mountain left ajarG2
-
The sea birds love and the land birds fleeR
The large bleak voice of the burly seaR
