ThereA
paused to shut the doorB
A fellow called the WindC
With mystery beforeB
And reticence behindC
-
A portal waits me tooD
In the glad house of springE
One day I shall pass throughD
And leave you wonderingE
-
It lies beyond the margeF
Of evening or of primeG
Silent and dim and largeF
The gateway of all timeG
-
There troop by night and dayH
My brothers of the fieldI
And I shall know the wayH
Their woodsongs have revealedI
-
The dusk will hold some traceJ
Of all my radiant crewD
Who vanished to that placeJ
Ephemeral as dewD
-
Into the twilight dunK
Blue moth and dragon flyL
Adventuring aloneM
Shall be more brave than IL
-
There innocents shall bloomN
And the white cherry treeO
With birch and willow plumeN
To strew the road for meO
-
The wilding orioles thenP
Shall make the golden airA
Heavy with joy againP
And the dark heart shall dareA
-
Resume the old desireQ
The exigence of springE
To be the orange fireQ
That tips the world's gray wingE
-
And the lone wood bird HarkR
The whippoorwill night longS
Threshing the summer darkR
With his dim flail of songS
-
Shall be the lyric liftT
When all my senses creepU
To bear me through the riftT
In the blue range of sleepU
-
And so I pass beyondV
The solace of your handW
But ah so brave and fondV
Within that morrow landW
-
Where deed and daring failX
But joy forevermoreQ
Shall tremble and prevailX
Against the narrow doorQ
-
Where sorrow knocks too lateY
And grief is overdueD
Beyond the granite gateY
There will be thoughts of youD
