On his fiftieth birthdayA
With friends you stalwart stand and fairB
To day of fifty years the heirB
The past your works rejoicing praiseC
But forward goes your gazeC
Your childlike faith your spirit trueD
Your hand that never weary grewD
A home's sweet music love of wifeE
Make ever young your lifeE
-
You dared believe with heart aliveF
That here in Norway art can thriveF
You forced the hardness of our stonesG
To harmony of tonesG
You laid our wild world's secrets bareB
And caught 'The Hunter' near the lairB
Our nation's moods of beauty bornH
Your 'Girl with Eggs' adornH
-
As o'er a slope's snow covered browI
A youth came swiftly flying nowI
You saw him raised your hand and loJ
He stood there chiseled snowJ
But your 'Ski runner's' courage goodK
It was your own when forth you stoodK
Art's champion by the world unawedK
And with your faith in GodK
-
You won your victory supremeL
Through rock like faith and will's full streamL
While with unnumbered hours of restK
Your love has others blessedK
Were all now here from west and eastK
Whose hearts you own oh what a feastK
From Akershus the convicts e'enM
Would bear a freeman's mienN
-
Now we whose lives with good you filledK
For you to day a palace buildK
On heights of heart's ease lifting squareB
Its golden tower of prayerB
In peace you oft shall dwell in itK
Whene'er you need to rest a bitK
And feel through them who hold you dearO
Yourself to heaven nearO
-
Long since our country to you gaveP
The meed of thanks that most you craveP
It gave a maid with golden hairB
Its springtime's image fairB
She came from where the fairies dwellQ
With nixie's charm and wood nymph's spellQ
With peace all holy sweet and calmR
To sing of life the psalmS
-
So may your life yet long endureT
To light our gland your home secureT
May all that from your heart you gaveP
Still blossom on your graveP
May God's protecting mercy holdK
Your spirit ever fresh and boldK
May He to genius oft impartK
Just such a mind and heartK
