Of long toil 't is a matterA
Through many a silent ageB
Before such power can shatterA
Time hallowed custom's cageB
The soul fruit of the peasantC
Though seldom seed was sownD
It is our honor presentC
Our future sure foreknownD
-
The fjords that earnest waitedE
'Mid mountain snows aroundF
His childhood's thoughts createdE
And depth of life profoundF
The highlands' sun that played thereG
On fjord and mountain snowD
So wide a vision made thereG
As one could wish to knowD
-
WhenD
he-
to Ting repairingH
Would plead the peasant's rightI
Each word a beam was bearingH
To make our young day brightI
It came like ancient story-
Or long lost song's refrainD
What crowned our past with glory-
It made our present gainD
-
Though in his boat a seamanD
A farmer in his fieldJ
Ne'er finer thoughts did freemanD
In royal council wieldJ
His years bear witness ready-
That we shall yet achieveK
Our people's self rule steady-
He taught us to believeK
-
When weary worn and agedL
His faith was ever strongM
The people's war he wag d-
For victory erelongM
Beneath the banner dyingM
He would not yet give o'erA
And him Valkyries flyingM
Home to Valhalla boreN
-
From wintry night and bitterA
He was with stately treadO
In Saga's hall a glitterA
Before the high sear ledO
Old heroes proud or merry-
Rising to greet him wentP
But first of all King Sverre-
From whom was his descentP
