Oh when will you stand forth who with strength can bring aidA
To strike down the injustice and liesB
That my house have beset and with malice blockadeA
Every pathway I out for my powers have laidA
And would hidden means findC
With deceit and with hateD
To set watch on my mindC
And defile every plateD
In my beautiful home where defenseless we waitD
-
Oh when will you stand forth This detraction through yearsE
For my people has made me an oafF
Hides my poetry's fount in the fog of its fleersE
So it merely a pool of self worship appearsE
Like a clumsy troll IG
Am contemned with affrontH
Whom all 'cultured' folk flyG
Or yet gather to huntH
That their hunger of hate at a feast they may bluntH
-
When I publish a book 'It is half like himself '-
If I speak 't is for vanity's sakeI
What I build in the stage world of fancy's free elfF
Is but formed from my fatuous selfF
When for faith I contendJ
And our land's ancient waysE
When the bridge I defendJ
From our fathers' great daysE
'Tis because my poor breast no king's 'Order' displaysE
-
Oh when will you stand forth who shall sunder in twainK
All this slander so stifling and foulL
And shall sink in the sea all the terror insaneK
That they have of heart passion and will wielding brainK
And with love shall enfoldM
A soul's faith wide and deepN
That in want and in coldM
Would its morning watch keepN
Undismayed till the light all the host shall ensweepN
-
Come thou Spirit of Norway God given of yoreO
In the stout giant conquering ThorO
While the lightning thou ridest thy answer's loud roarO
Drowns the din that the dwarfs in defiance outpourO
Thou canst waken with mightP
All our longings to soarO
Thou canst strengthen in rightP
What united we sworeO
When at Hafur thy standard in honor we boreO
-
Hail thou Spirit of Norway To think but of theeQ
Makes so small all the small things I feltR
To thy coming I hallow me wholly to theeQ
And I humbly look up to thy face unto theeQ
And I pray for a songS
With thy tongue's stirring soundT
That I true may and strongS
In the crisis be foundT
To rouse heroes for thee on our forefathers' groundT
