Oh, When Will You Stand Forth? Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAACDCDD EFEEGHGHH IFFJEJEE KLKKMNMNN OOOOPOPOO QRQQSTSTT| Oh when will you stand forth who with strength can bring aid | A |
| To strike down the injustice and lies | B |
| That my house have beset and with malice blockade | A |
| Every pathway I out for my powers have laid | A |
| And would hidden means find | C |
| With deceit and with hate | D |
| To set watch on my mind | C |
| And defile every plate | D |
| In my beautiful home where defenseless we wait | D |
| - | |
| Oh when will you stand forth This detraction through years | E |
| For my people has made me an oaf | F |
| Hides my poetry's fount in the fog of its fleers | E |
| So it merely a pool of self worship appears | E |
| Like a clumsy troll I | G |
| Am contemned with affront | H |
| Whom all 'cultured' folk fly | G |
| Or yet gather to hunt | H |
| That their hunger of hate at a feast they may blunt | H |
| - | |
| When I publish a book 'It is half like himself ' | - |
| If I speak 't is for vanity's sake | I |
| What I build in the stage world of fancy's free elf | F |
| Is but formed from my fatuous self | F |
| When for faith I contend | J |
| And our land's ancient ways | E |
| When the bridge I defend | J |
| From our fathers' great days | E |
| 'Tis because my poor breast no king's 'Order' displays | E |
| - | |
| Oh when will you stand forth who shall sunder in twain | K |
| All this slander so stifling and foul | L |
| And shall sink in the sea all the terror insane | K |
| That they have of heart passion and will wielding brain | K |
| And with love shall enfold | M |
| A soul's faith wide and deep | N |
| That in want and in cold | M |
| Would its morning watch keep | N |
| Undismayed till the light all the host shall ensweep | N |
| - | |
| Come thou Spirit of Norway God given of yore | O |
| In the stout giant conquering Thor | O |
| While the lightning thou ridest thy answer's loud roar | O |
| Drowns the din that the dwarfs in defiance outpour | O |
| Thou canst waken with might | P |
| All our longings to soar | O |
| Thou canst strengthen in right | P |
| What united we swore | O |
| When at Hafur thy standard in honor we bore | O |
| - | |
| Hail thou Spirit of Norway To think but of thee | Q |
| Makes so small all the small things I felt | R |
| To thy coming I hallow me wholly to thee | Q |
| And I humbly look up to thy face unto thee | Q |
| And I pray for a song | S |
| With thy tongue's stirring sound | T |
| That I true may and strong | S |
| In the crisis be found | T |
| To rouse heroes for thee on our forefathers' ground | T |
