I read once of a flower that lonely grewA
Apart with trembling stem and pale of hueA
The mountain world of cold and strifeB
Gave little lifeB
And less of colorC
-
A botanist the flower chanced to seeD
And glad exclaimed Oh this must sheltered beD
Must seed produce renewing birthE
In sun warmed earthE
Become a thousandF
-
But as he dug and drew it from the groundG
Strange glitterings upon his hands he foundG
For to its roots clung dust of golden hueA
The flower grewA
On golden treasureC
-
And from the region wide came all the youthH
To see the wonder they divined the truthH
Here lay their country's future mightI
A ray of lightI
From God that flowerC
-
This I recall now even while I mournJ
The Lord of life has lifted him and borneJ
From mountain cold and wintry airK
To fruitage fairK
In warmth eternalL
-
For where the roots were of that life repleteM
What gleams and glitters See they ran to meetM
The shafts of wisdom's goodly minesN
The gold that shinesN
In veins of God's thoughtO
-
Now he is lifted up to light are broughtO
The riches he to guard so faithful soughtO
The treasures of our past are thereK
And glintings rareK
Of future richesP
-
Come Norway's youth Unearth to use the hoardQ
That round this heaven borne flower's roots was storedQ
To you his message Hear and heedR
Achieve in deedR
His dream and longingS
