To the grave they bore him sleepingA
Him the aged genial gardenerB
Now the children gifts are heapingA
From the flower bed he madeC
-
There the tree that he sat underB
And the garden gate is openD
While we cast a glance and wonderB
Whether some one sits there stillE
-
He is gone A woman onlyF
Wanders there with languid footstepsG
Clothed in black and now so lonelyF
Where his laughter erst rang clearH
-
As a child when past it goingA
Through the fence she looked with longingA
Now great tears so freely flowingA
Are her thanks that she came inI
-
Fairy tales and thoughts high soaringA
Whispered to him 'neath the foliageJ
She flits softly gathering storingA
Them as solace for her woeK
-
-
-
Far his wanderings once bore himL
Bore this aged genial searcherB
One who listening sat before himL
Much could learn from time to timeM
-
Life and letters were his ladderB
Up toward that which few discoverB
Thought's wide realm with vision gladderB
He explored each summit scaledN
-
In his manhood he defendedO
All that greatness has and beautyF
Later he the stars attendedO
In their silent course to GodP
-
-
-
Older men remember ratherB
New Year ringing o'er the NorthlandQ
How it power had to gatherB
Leaders to a greater ageR
-
Do you him remember leapingA
Forth his horn so gladly windingA
Back the mob on all sides sweepingA
From the progress of the greatS
-
Play of thought 'mid tears and laughterB
Fauns and children were about himL
Freedom's beacons high thereafterB
Kindled slowly of themselvesT
-
And his words soon found a hearingA
Peace of heart flowed from his musicU
All the land thrilled to the nearingA
Of a great prophetic choirB
-
-
-
In his manhood he defendedO
All that greatness has and beautyF
Later he the stars attendedO
In their silent course to GodP
-
Northern flowers were his pleasureB
As an aged genial gardenerB
From his nation's springtime treasureB
Culling seed for deathless growthV
-
Now with humor now sedatelyF
He kept planting or uprootingA
While the Danish beech tree statelyF
Gave his soul its evening peaceW
-
There the tree we saw him underB
And the garden gate is openD
While we cast a glance and wonderB
Whether some one sits there stillE
