Daniel Schjà¶tz Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCBCDEDEFGFG HIHIHJHJHKHK

DIED OF OVER EXERTION AS VOLUNTEER MILITARY SURGEONA
-
He gave heed to no Great PowerB
But the one that God we callC
Hastening on to death's high hourB
He before asked not the GaulC
Nor the Briton nor the othersD
If he too had leave to dieE
In the battle of his brothersD
Underneath the Danish skyE
First to act with ardor youthfulF
First a strong clear faith to showG
First to swear in spirit truthfulF
First o'er death's dark bridge to goG
-
Knowing not in times so tryingH
None would come but he aloneI
Thus he struggled death defyingH
For the sacred things we ownI
He of thousands here remainingH
Single would the name redeemJ
Sank then with his zeal unwaningH
Down beneath death's silent streamJ
First of souls in hope believingH
Freedom's right 'gainst wrong to wieldK
First warm drop full flowing cleavingH
Of our blood on Denmark's shieldK
