O'er uplands fresh swift sped my sleigh | B |
A light snow fell along the way | B |
Stood firs and birches slender | C |
The former pondered deep alone | D |
The latter laughed their white boughs shone | D |
All brings a picture tender | C |
- | |
So light and free is now the air | E |
Of all its burdens stripped it bare | E |
The snow with playful sally | F |
I glimpse behind its veil so thin | G |
A landscape gay and high within | G |
A snow peak o'er the valley | F |
- | |
But from the border white and brown | H |
Where'er I look there's peeping down | H |
A face but whose whose is it | I |
I bore my gaze 'neath cap and brim | J |
And see the snowflakes swarm and swim | J |
Will some one here me visit | K |
- | |
A star fell on my glove right here | L |
And here again its unlike peer | M |
They will with riddles pose me | F |
And smiles that in the air abound | N |
From eyes so good I look around | N |
'T is memory besnows me | F |
- | |
The stars spin fine their filigree | F |
Can hidden spirits in it be | F |
There haunts me something awing | O |
You finer birch you snow unstained | P |
You purer air a soul you've gained | P |
Who is it here now drawing | O |
- | |
His features dear in nature's face | Q |
In all this fascinating grace | Q |
In falling stars that cheat me | F |
In these white gleams that finely glance | R |
In all this silent rhythmic dance | R |
Hans Brecke comes to meet me | F |
