O'er uplands fresh swift sped my sleighB
A light snow fell along the wayB
Stood firs and birches slenderC
The former pondered deep aloneD
The latter laughed their white boughs shoneD
All brings a picture tenderC
-
So light and free is now the airE
Of all its burdens stripped it bareE
The snow with playful sallyF
I glimpse behind its veil so thinG
A landscape gay and high withinG
A snow peak o'er the valleyF
-
But from the border white and brownH
Where'er I look there's peeping downH
A face but whose whose is itI
I bore my gaze 'neath cap and brimJ
And see the snowflakes swarm and swimJ
Will some one here me visitK
-
A star fell on my glove right hereL
And here again its unlike peerM
They will with riddles pose meF
And smiles that in the air aboundN
From eyes so good I look aroundN
'T is memory besnows meF
-
The stars spin fine their filigreeF
Can hidden spirits in it beF
There haunts me something awingO
You finer birch you snow unstainedP
You purer air a soul you've gainedP
Who is it here now drawingO
-
His features dear in nature's faceQ
In all this fascinating graceQ
In falling stars that cheat meF
In these white gleams that finely glanceR
In all this silent rhythmic danceR
Hans Brecke comes to meet meF
