The Iron Bridge Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFG HGHIJJKLJMNO EPQRPBS TUAVJW XUYZ JA2ZB2C2J

I am standing on a disused iron bridgeA
that was erected inB
according to the iron plaque bolted into a beamC
the year my mother turned oneD
Imagine a mother in her infancyE
and she was a Canadian infant at thatF
one of the great infants of the province of OntarioG
-
But here I am leaning on the rusted railingH
looking at the water belowG
which is flat and reflective this morningH
sky blue and streaked with high cloudsI
and the more I look at the waterJ
which is like a talking pictureJ
the more I think ofK
when workmen in shirts and capsL
riveted this iron bridge togetherJ
across a thin channel joining two lakesM
where wildflowers blow along the shore nowN
and pairs of swans float in the leafy covesO
-
my mother was so tinyE
she could have fit into one of those ovalP
baskets for holding applesQ
which her mother could have lined with a soft clothR
and placed on the kitchen tableP
so she could keep an eye on infant KatherineB
while she scrubbed potatoes or shelled a bag of peasS
-
the way I am keeping an eye on that cormorantT
who just broke the glassy surfaceU
and is moving away from me and the iron bridgeA
swiveling his curious headV
slipping out to where the sun rakes the waterJ
and filters through the trees that crowd the shoreW
-
And now he divesX
disappears below the surfaceU
and while I wait for him to pop upY
I picture him flying underwater with his strange wingsZ
-
as I picture you my tiny motherJ
who disappeared last yearA2
flying somewhere with your strange wingsZ
your wide eyes and your heavy wet dressB2
kicking deeper down into a lakeC2
with no end or name some boundless province of waterJ
