Consolation Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBCB BDDBB EFBFG BBHIJ DAKLM NOP

How agreeable it is not to be touring Italy this summerA
wandering her cities and ascending her torrid hilltownsB
How much better to cruise these local familiar streetsB
fully grasping the meaning of every roadsign and billboardC
and all the sudden hand gestures of my compatriotsB
-
There are no abbeys here no crumbling frescoes or famousB
domes and there is no need to memorize a successionD
of kings or tour the dripping corners of a dungeonD
No need to stand around a sarcophagus see Napoleon'sB
little bed on Elba or view the bones of a saint under glassB
-
How much better to command the simple precinct of homeE
than be dwarfed by pillar arch and basilicaF
Why hide my head in phrase books and wrinkled mapsB
Why feed scenery into a hungry one eyes cameraF
eager to eat the world one monument at a timeG
-
Instead of slouching in a caf eacute ignorant of the word for iceB
I will head down to the coffee shop and the waitressB
known as Dot I will slide into the flow of the morningH
paper all language barriers downI
rivers of idiom running freely eggs over easy on the wayJ
-
And after breakfast I will not have to find someoneD
willing to photograph me with my arm around the ownerA
I will not puzzle over the bill or record in a journalK
what I had to eat and how the sun came in the windowL
It is enough to climb back into the carM
-
as if it were the great car of English itselfN
and sounding my loud vernacular horn speed offO
down a road that will never lead to Rome not even BolognaP
