Christmas Sparrow Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCD AEFG HIJGKL CKMN OPQCC RISTUCVW GEXI

The first thing I heard this morningA
was a soft insistent rustleB
the rapid flapping of wingsC
against glass as it turned outD
-
a small bird riotingA
in the frame of a high windowE
trying to hurl itself throughF
the enigma of transparency into the spacious lightG
-
A noise in the throat of the catH
hunkered on the rugI
told me how the bird had gotten insideJ
carried in the cold nightG
through the flap in a basement doorK
and later released from the soft clench of teethL
-
Up on a chair I trapped its pulsationsC
in a small towel and carried it to the doorK
so weightless it seemedM
to have vanished into the nest of clothN
-
But outside it burstO
from my uncupped hands into its elementP
dipping over the dormant gardenQ
in a spasm of wingbeatsC
and disappearing over a tall row of hemlocksC
-
Still for the rest of the dayR
I could feel its wild thrummingI
against my palms whenever I thoughtS
about the hours the bird must have spentT
pent in the shadows of that roomU
hidden in the spiky branchesC
of our decorated tree breathing thereV
among metallic angels ceramic apples stars of yarnW
-
its eyes open like mine as I lie here tonightG
picturing this rare lucky sparrowE
tucked into a holly bush nowX
a light snow tumbling through the windless darkI
