Candle Hat Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AAABC BDE FGAH IGJ GA KLM CD AA NOPQR

In most self portraits it is the face that dominatesA
Cezanne is a pair of eyes swimming in brushstrokesA
Van Gogh stares out of a halo of swirling darknessA
Rembrant looks relieved as if he were taking a breatherB
from painting The Blinding of SampsonC
-
But in this one Goya stands well back from the mirrorB
and is seen posed in the clutter of his studioD
addressing a canvas tilted back on a tall easelE
-
He appears to be smiling out at us as if he knewF
we would be amused by the extraordinary hat on his headG
which is fitted around the brim with candle holdersA
a device that allowed him to work into the nightH
-
You can only wonder what it would be likeI
to be wearing such a chandelier on your headG
as if you were a walking dining room or concert hallJ
-
But once you see this hat there is no need to readG
any biography of Goya or to memorize his datesA
-
To understand Goya you only have to imagine himK
lighting the candles one by one then placingL
the hat on his head ready for a night of workM
-
Imagine him surprising his wife with his new inventionC
the laughing like a birthday cake when she saw the glowD
-
Imagine him flickering through the rooms of his houseA
with all the shadows flying across the wallsA
-
Imagine a lost traveler knocking on his doorN
one dark night in the hill country of SpainO
Come in he would say I was just painting myselfP
as he stood in the doorway holding up the wand of a brushQ
illuminated in the blaze of his famous candle hatR
