My basking villas nest	B
Where sifted sunshine soothes the eye	C

And Comfort crooning mitigates	I
The drifting moan of pain	J

My sages God's commandments frame	K
From maxims of the desk	L
My Art from poverty and shame	K
Evolves the Picturesque	M

By glamour haloed leering Lust	N
So angel like appears	O
That Scruple loses her distrust	N
And Innocence her fears	O

Secure I lounge upon the shore	P
Where Anger's breakers throb	Q
Or high above the marsh ignore	P
Its ague smitten mob	Q

The highways to Desire I hold	R
And fatten on the fees	S
My hungry Science gathers gold	R
From limbecks of disease	S

Success my sorcerer refines	T
My murder tainted hoard	U
And hides the felon weals and lines	T
With which my back is scored	U

He perfumes from my women's gowns	V
Their tainted makers' shame	K
In Glory cyclic Wrong he drowns	V
And Treachery in Fame	K

Who reaches me a stream must ford	U
Whose poppied waters dim	W
Old dreams of wielding Freedom's sword	U
And chanting Freedom's hymn	W

Must hold the claims of Discontent	X
Mere envies of the mass	Y
That Life's repose was only meant	X
To dower the ruling class	Y

That Toil deserves its crown of thorns	Z
