Evensong Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDED FGFG DHDH IDID JKJK LMLN DODO PDAD

There was a time we had the powerA
To build with Silent ThoughtB
The perfect heaven reaching towerA
As ancient seers have taughtB
And periods have been when allC
Felt subtle agenciesD
Envelop life with gloomy pallE
Or glad sublimitiesD
-
When each felt safe in God's own careF
When eyes had farther sweepG
When angels' visits were not rareF
And Conscience dared not sleepG
-
'When Silent Lands that no one heedsD
But sentries of the vanH
Displayed their good or evil deedsD
Before the eyes of manH
-
'When all could read the Silent ScriptI
And ope the Temple's barsD
When every blade of grass was tippedI
With signals from the starsD
-
But now for trust mayhap betrayedJ
Or pride too loosely checkedK
The Silent Oracles evadeJ
Our questions too directK
-
Precisian pundits bid us thinkL
The gods have never beenM
The daylight pales the forms that linkL
The Silence with the SeenN
-
Usurping Sun the sky folk pensD
Unwindowed in his blueO
The trumpet blare of common senseD
Our hearing deafens tooO
-
But when we bid the band retireP
And the Sun unhorse his carsD
We hear an empyrean choirA
And see the Silent StarsD
