Evensong Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDED FGFG DHDH IDID JKJK LMLN DODO PDADThere was a time we had the power | A |
To build with Silent Thought | B |
The perfect heaven reaching tower | A |
As ancient seers have taught | B |
And periods have been when all | C |
Felt subtle agencies | D |
Envelop life with gloomy pall | E |
Or glad sublimities | D |
- | |
When each felt safe in God's own care | F |
When eyes had farther sweep | G |
When angels' visits were not rare | F |
And Conscience dared not sleep | G |
- | |
'When Silent Lands that no one heeds | D |
But sentries of the van | H |
Displayed their good or evil deeds | D |
Before the eyes of man | H |
- | |
'When all could read the Silent Script | I |
And ope the Temple's bars | D |
When every blade of grass was tipped | I |
With signals from the stars | D |
- | |
But now for trust mayhap betrayed | J |
Or pride too loosely checked | K |
The Silent Oracles evade | J |
Our questions too direct | K |
- | |
Precisian pundits bid us think | L |
The gods have never been | M |
The daylight pales the forms that link | L |
The Silence with the Seen | N |
- | |
Usurping Sun the sky folk pens | D |
Unwindowed in his blue | O |
The trumpet blare of common sense | D |
Our hearing deafens too | O |
- | |
But when we bid the band retire | P |
And the Sun unhorse his cars | D |
We hear an empyrean choir | A |
And see the Silent Stars | D |
