I am the gift of tongues that flameA
Inspired resolve aboveB
I wither the weeds of paltry aimA
That choke the growth of loveB
-
Though sometimes thro' forbidden gatesC
The drugged and drunken mayD
Intrude among initiatesE
And misconceive the playD
-
No self indulgence walks my stageF
My frenzies make divineG
My banqueter is saint and sageF
A eucharist my wineG
-
No desecrated home shall beH
No vice predestined birthI
No stews of maudlin gluttonyH
When Bacchus rules the earthI
-
My rage that lit the cold Greek browJ
And burned from Orphic lyreK
Flames down the years to Tolstoi nowJ
And back to Celtic fireL
-
I glowed in Hermit Peter's wordsM
Savonarola's grimN
St Francis understood the birdsM
Because I cherished himN
-
I am the surging EnergyH
No wintry Law can tameA
Nay the god that overpowers meH
Is Bacchus save in nameA
-
'Tis not alone on Naxian sodO
Or mythic welkin whereP
Pale Ariadne meets her godO
And Bacchus gladdens herL
-
I shine as bright from Nietzsche's eyesQ
And grave Salvationist'sQ
As once in Soma sacrificeQ
Or through Thessalian mistsQ
-
And equally to fast and feastR
I give my benisonJ
Now Father Mathew is my priestR
And now AnacreonJ
-
'Tis not enough that you avowJ
Allegiance at my gatesQ
Many who bear the wattle boughJ
Are not initiatesQ
-
Nor all the revellers though dearS
Who beat my doors with prayersQ
But sing so sweet they cannot hearT
The poor who knock at theirsQ
-
For 'Truth for Truth' and 'Art for Art'R
And Song for the sake of SongU
Must wait the turn of the breaking heartR
Till Bacchus purges WrongU
-
All that in Love ye cannot buyV
In genius baffling prayerP
In Art beyond the measuring eyeV
Is immanent Bacchus thereP
-
But fearful are my Mystae whenJ
To Bacchanalian hymnJ
They wrench the brute from the souls of menJ
And tear it limb from limbJ
-
The old gods shuddered for they sawQ
Their altar flames expireK
Before the breath of a Higher LawQ
That crucifies DesireL
-
The old priests paled till some more wiseQ
Built fanes where're I trodR
Carried my throne to Olympian skiesQ
And named me the Son of GodR
