The Stormy Petrel Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEE FFGGAAHHII JJKKLLMMII

A THOUSAND miles from land are weA
Tossing about on the roaring seaA
From billow to bounding billow castB
Like fleecy snow on the stormy blastB
The sails are scatter d abroad like weedsC
The strong masts shake like quivering reedsC
The mighty cables and iron chainsD
The hull which all earthly strength disdainsD
They strain and they crack and hearts like stoneE
Their natural hard proud strength disownE
-
Up and down Up and downF
From the base of the wave to the billow s crownF
And midst the flashing and feathery foamG
The Stormy Petrel finds a homeG
A home if such a place may beA
For her who lives on the wide wide seaA
On the craggy ice in the frozen airH
And only seeketh her rocky lairH
To warm her young and to teach them springI
At once o er the waves on their stormy wingI
-
O er the Deep O er the DeepJ
Where the whale and the shark and the sword fish sleepJ
Outflying the blast and the driving rainK
The Petrel telleth her tale in vainK
For the mariner curseth the warning birdL
Who bringeth him news of the storms unheardL
Ah thus does the prophet of good or illM
Meet hate from the creatures he serveth stillM
Yet he ne er falters So Petrel springI
Once more o er the waves on thy stormy wingI
