The Sea Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC AADDEE FFGGDD HHIIAAJ JAKLL MMNNAA

THE SEA the sea the open seaA
The blue the fresh the ever freeA
Without a mark without a boundB
It runneth the earth s wide regions roundB
It plays with the clouds it mocks the skiesC
Or like a cradled creature liesC
-
I m on the sea I m on the seaA
I am where I would ever beA
With the blue above and the blue belowD
And silence wheresoe er I goD
If a storm should come and awake the deepE
What matter I shall ride and sleepE
-
I love O how I love to rideF
On the fierce foaming bursting tideF
When every mad wave drowns the moonG
Or whistles aloft his tempest tuneG
And tells how goeth the world belowD
And why the sou west blasts do blowD
-
I never was on the dull tame shoreH
But I lov d the great sea more and moreH
And backwards flew to her billowy breastI
Like a bird that seeketh its mother s nestI
And a mother she was and is to meA
For I was born on the open seaA
The waves were white and red the mornJ
-
In the noisy hour when I was bornJ
And the whale it whistled the porpoise roll dA
And the dolphins bared their backs of goldK
And never was heard such an outcry wildL
As welcom d to life the ocean childL
-
I ve liv d since then in calm and strifeM
Full fifty summers a sailor s lifeM
With wealth to spend and a power to rangeN
But never have sought nor sighed for changeN
And Death whenever he comes to meA
Shall come on the wild unbounded seaA
