It runneth the earth s wide regions round | B |
It plays with the clouds it mocks the skies | C |
Or like a cradled creature lies | C |

I am where I would ever be | A |
With the blue above and the blue below | D |
And silence wheresoe er I go | D |
If a storm should come and awake the deep | E |
What matter I shall ride and sleep | E |

On the fierce foaming bursting tide | F |
When every mad wave drowns the moon | G |
Or whistles aloft his tempest tune | G |
And tells how goeth the world below | D |
And why the sou west blasts do blow | D |

But I lov d the great sea more and more | H |
And backwards flew to her billowy breast | I |
Like a bird that seeketh its mother s nest | I |
And a mother she was and is to me | A |
For I was born on the open sea | A |
The waves were white and red the morn | J |

In the noisy hour when I was born | J |
And the whale it whistled the porpoise roll d | A |
And the dolphins bared their backs of gold | K |

As welcom d to life the ocean child | L |

Full fifty summers a sailor s life | M |
With wealth to spend and a power to range | N |
But never have sought nor sighed for change | N |
And Death whenever he comes to me | A |
Shall come on the wild unbounded sea | A |
