The Boastful Crow and the Laughing JackA
Were telling tales of the outer backA
I've just been travelling far and wideB
At the back of Bourke and the Queensland sideB
There isn't a bird in the bush can goC
As far as me said the old black crowC
There isn't a bird in the bush can flyD
A course as straight or a course as highD
Higher than human eyesight goesE
-
There's sometimes clouds but there's always crowsE
Drifting along for a scent of bloodF
Or a smell of smoke or a sign of floodF
For never a bird or a beast has beenG
With a sight as strong or a scent as keenH
At fires and floods I'm the first aboutI
For then the lizards and mice run outI
And I make my swoop and that's all they knowC
I'm a whale on mice said the Boastful CrowC
-
The Bee birds over the homestead flewJ
And told each other the long day throughJ
The cold has come we must take the trackA
Now I'll make you a bet said the Laughing JackA
Of a hundred mice that you dare not goC
With the little Bee birds by Boastful CrowC
-
Said the Boastful Crow I could take my easeK
And fly with little green birds like theseK
If they went flat out and they did their bestL
I could have a smoke and could take a restL
And he asked of the Bee birds circling roundM
Now where do you spike tails think you're boundM
We leave tonight and out present planN
is to go straight on till we reach JapanN
-
Every year on the self same dayO
We call our children and start awayO
Twittering travelling day and nightP
Over the ocean we take our flightP
And we rest a day on some lonely islesQ
Or we beg a ride for a hundred milesQ
On a steamer's deck and away we goC
We hope you'll come with us Mister CrowC
-
But the old black crow was extremely sadR
Said he I reckon you're raving madR
To talk of travelling night and dayO
And how in the world do you find your wayO
And the Bee birds answered him If you pleaseK
That's one of our own great mysteriesK
-
Now these things chanced in the long agoC
And explain the fact which no doubt you knowC
That every jackass high and lowC
Will always laugh when he sees a crowC
