Wargeilah town is very smallA
There's no cathedral nor a clubB
In fact the township all in allA
Is just one unpretentious pubB
And there from all the stations roundC
The local sportsmen can be foundC
-
The sportsmen of Wargeilah sideD
Are very few but very fitE
There's scarcely any sport been triedD
But they can hold their own at itE
In fact to search their records o'erF
They hold their own and something moreG
-
The precincts of Wargeilah townH
An English new chum did infestI
He used to wander up and downH
In baggy English breeches drestI
His mental aspect seemed to beJ
Just stolid self sufficiencyJ
-
The local sportsmen vainly soughtI
His tranquil calm to counteractI
By urging that he should be broughtI
Within the Noxious Creatures ActI
Nay harm him not said one more wiseK
He is a blessing in disguiseK
-
You see he wants to buy a horseL
To ride and hunt and steeplechaseM
And carry ladies too of courseL
And pull a cart and win a raceM
Good gracious he must be a flatI
To think he'll get a horse like thatI
-
But since he has so little senseN
And such a lot of cash to burnO
We'll sell him some experienceP
By which alone a fool can learnO
Suppose we let him have The TrapQ
To win Wargeilah HandicapQ
-
And her I must explain to youR
That round about Wargeilah runS
There lived a very aged screwR
Whose days of brilliancy were doneS
A grand old warrior in his primeT
But age will beat us any timeT
-
A trooper's horse in seasons pastI
He did his share to keep the peaceU
But took to falling and at lastI
Was cast for age from the PoliceU
A publican at Conroy's GapQ
Bought him and christened him The TrapQ
-
When grass was good and horses dearV
He changed his owner now and thenW
At prices ranging somewhere nearV
The neighbourhood of two pound tenW
And manfully he earned his keepX
By yarding cows and ration sheepX
-
They brought him in from off the grassY
And fed and groomed the old horse upZ
His coat began to shine like glassY
You'd think he'd win the Melbourne CupZ
And when they'd got him fat and flashA2
They asked the new chum fifty cashA2
-
And when he said the price was highB2
Their indignation knew no boundsC2
They said It's seldom you can buyB2
A horse like that for fifty poundsC2
We'll refund twenty if The TrapQ
Should fail to win the handicapQ
-
The deed was done the price was paidI
The new chum put the horse in trainD2
The local sports were much afraidI
That he would sad experience gainD2
By racing with some shearer's hackE2
Who'd beat him half way round the trackE2
-
So on this guileless English sparkF2
They did most fervently impressG2
That he must keep the matter darkF2
And not let any person guessG2
That he was purchasing The TrapQ
To win Wargeilah HandicapQ
-
They spoke of spielers from the BlandI
And champions from the CastlereaghB2
And gave the youth to understandI
That all of these would stop awayH2
And spoil the race if they should hearI2
That they had got The Trap to fearV
-
Keep dark They'll muster thick as fliesK
When once the news gets sent aroundI
We're giving such a splendid prizeK
A Snowdon horse worth fifty poundI
They'll come right in from DandalooA
And find that it's a gift for youR
-
The race came on with no displayA
Nor any calling of the cardI
But round about the pub all dayA
A crowd of shearers drinking hardI
And using language in a strainD2
'Twere flattery to call profaneD2
-
Our hero dressed in silk attireF
Blue jacket and scarlet capQ
With boots that shone like flames of fireF
Now did his canter on The TrapQ
And walked him up and round aboutI
Until other steeds came outI
-
He eyed them with a haughty lookJ2
But saw a sight that caught his breathK2
It was Ah John the Chinee cookJ2
In boots and breeches pale as deathK2
Tied with a rope like any sackE2
Upon a piebald pony's backE2
-
The next a colt all mud and burrsK
Half broken with a black boy upZ
Who said You gim'me pair o' spursK
I win the bloomin' Melbourne CupZ
These two were to oppose The TrapQ
For the Wargeilah HandicapQ
-
They're off The colt whipped down his headI
And humped his back and gave a squealA
And bucked into the drinking shedI
Revolving like a Catherine wheelA
Men ran like rats The atmosphereV
Was filled with oaths and pints of beerV
-
But up the course the bold Ah JohnL2
Beside The Trap raced neck and neckM2
The boys had tied him firmly onL2
Which ultimately proved his wreckM2
The saddle turned and like a clownH
He rode some distance upside downH
-
His legs around the horse were tiedI
His feet towards the heavens were spreadI
He swung and bumped at every strideI
And ploughed the ground up with his headI
And when they rescued him The TrapQ
Had won Wargeilah HandicapQ
-
And no enquiries we could makeN2
Could tell by what false statements swayedI
Ah John was led to undertakeN2
A task so foreign to his tradeI
He only smiled and said Hoo KiJ
I stop topside I win all li'A
-
But never in Wargeilah TownH
Was heard so eloquent a cheerV
As when the President came downH
And toasted in Colonial beerV
The finest rider on the courseK
The winner of the Snowdon HorseK
-
You go and get your prize he saidI
He's with a wild mob somewhere roundI
The mountains near the WatershedI
He's honestly worth fifty poundI
A noble horse indeed to winO2
But none of us can run him inO2
-
We've chased him poor we've chased him fatI
We've run him till our horses droppedI
But by such obstacles as thatI
A man like you will not be stoppedI
You'll go and yard him any dayA
So here's your health Hooray HoorayA
-
The day wound up with booze and blowA
And fights till all were well contentI
But of the new chum all I knowA
Is shown by this advertisementI
For sale the well known racehorse TrapQ
He won Wargeilah HandicapQ
