The Road To Gundagai Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CC DB EE FF GG HH CC II DAB BB JJ KK DB

The mountain road goes up and downA
From Gundagai to Tumut TownA
And branching off there runs a trackB
Across the foothills grim and blackB
-
Across the plains and ranges greyC
To Sydney city far awayC
-
It came by chance one day that ID
From Tumut rode to GundagaiB
-
And reached about the evening tideE
The crossing where the roads divideE
-
And waiting at the crossing placeF
I saw a maiden fair of faceF
-
With eyes of deepest violet blueG
And cheeks to match the rose in hueG
-
The fairest maids Australia knowsH
Are bred among the mountain snowsH
-
Then fearing I might go astrayC
I asked if she could show the wayC
-
Her voice might well a man bewitchI
Its tones so supple deep and richI
-
The tracks are clear she made replyD
And this goes down to Sydney TownA
And that one goes to GundagaiB
-
Then slowly looking coyly backB
She went along the Sydney trackB
-
And I for one was well contentJ
To go the road the lady wentJ
-
But round the turn a swain she metK
The kiss she gave him haunts me yetK
-
I turned and travelled with a sighD
The lonely road to GundagaiB
