With never a sound of trumpetA
With never a flag displayedB
The last of the old campaignersC
Lined up for the last paradeB
-
Weary they were and batteredD
Shoeless and knocked aboutE
From under their ragged forelocksC
Their hungry eyes looked outE
-
And they watched as the old commanderF
Read out to the cheering menG
The Nation's thanks and the ordersC
To carry them home againG
-
And the last of the old campaignersC
Sinewy lean and spareH
He spoke for his hungry comradesC
Have we not done our shareH
-
Starving and tired and thirstyI
We limped on the blazing plainJ
And after a long night's picketK
You saddled us up againG
-
We froze on the windswept kopjesC
When the frost lay snowy whiteL
Never a halt in the daytimeM
Never a rest at nightL
-
We knew when the rifles rattledN
From the hillside bare and brownO
And over our weary shouldersC
We felt warm blood run downO
-
As we turned for the stretching gallopP
Crushed to the earth with weightQ
But we carried our riders through itK
Sometimes perhaps too lateQ
-
Steel We were steel to stand itK
We that have lasted throughR
We that are old campaignersC
Pitiful poor and fewR
-
Over the sea you brought usC
Over the leagues of foamS
Now we have served you fairlyI
Will you not take us homeS
-
Home to the Hunter RiverF
To the flats where the lucerne growsC
Home where the MurrumbidgeeT
Runs white with the melted snowsC
-
This is a small thing surelyI
Will not you give commandU
That the last of the old campaignersC
Go back to their native landU
-
They looked at the grim commanderF
But never a sign he madeB
Dismiss and the old campaignersC
Moved off from their last paradeB
