The Diggers Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAABCC DCD EE FCFCCC GHGH IJI AJAJJ

Bristling Billy the porcupineA
A person that nobody likedB
Sinking a shaft on an ant bed mineA
Came on a burrowing lizard's lineA
And the lizard was badly spikedB
'You're a blundering fool ' said the snake's half brotherC
And that was how one thing led to anotherC
-
Weary Willie the wombat kingD
Said he was champion excavatorC
But the Bristler said 'You ain't no such thingD
You couldn't dig up a new pertater '-
So a match was made on their mining skillE
Bristling Billy and Weary WillE
-
Both of the creatures were stout as steelF
With knife like claws that could dig for everC
The wombat dug with the greater zealF
But he hadn't the style or the action cleverC
Of Bristling Billy who looked a winnerC
Till he struck some ants and he stopped for dinnerC
-
Down where the ants had hid their youngG
Underground in a secret tunnelH
Scooping them up with his sticky tongueG
Into his mouth that was like a funnelH
'Why should I dig for your wagers scanty '-
Said he 'when I'm feeling so full and ant y '-
-
A kangaroo who has lost his cashI
Was wild at this most absurd come uppanceJ
'Now listen you poor ant eating trashI
I'd give you a kick in the ribs for twopence '-
'Well when I've finished with this here diet '-
Said Bristling Billy 'you come and try it '-
-
Bristling Billy the porcupineA
A person that nobody likesJ
Wanders away on his lonely lineA
Rattles his fearful spikesJ
Says he 'There's none of you long haired squibsJ
Is game to give me a kick in the ribs '-
