The Corner Man Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCBDEDEFE GHGHIH JKJKLK MCMCMC NONOPO

I dreamt a dream at the midnight deepA
When fancies come and goB
To vex a man in his soothing sleepA
With thoughts of awful woeB
I dreamed that I was the corner manC
Of a nigger minstrel showB
I cracked my jokes and the building rangD
With laughter loud and longE
I hushed the house as I softly sangD
An old plantation songE
A tale of the wicked slavery daysF
Of cruelty and wrongE
-
A small boy sat on the foremost seatG
A mirthful youngster heH
He beat the time with his restless feetG
To each new melodyH
And he picked me out as the brightest starI
Of the black fraternityH
-
Oh father he said what would we doJ
If the corner man should dieK
I never saw such a man did youJ
He makes the people cryK
And then when he likes he makes them laughL
The old man made replyK
-
We each of us fill a very small spaceM
On the great creation's planC
If a man don't keep his lead in the raceM
There's plenty more that canC
The world can very soon fill the placeM
Of even a corner manC
-
I woke with a jump rejoiced to findN
Myself at home in bedO
And I framed a moral in my mindN
From the words the old man saidO
The world will jog along just the sameP
When the corner men are deadO
