The Broken-down Squatter Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDECE CEFE CGHI JEKE LCMCNOPO OQRQCESE

Come Stumpy old man we must shift while we canA
All our mates in the paddock are deadB
Let us wave our farewells to Glen Eva's sweet dellsC
And the hills where your lordship was bredB
Together to roam from our drought stricken homeD
It seems hard that such things have to beE
And its hard on a hogs when he's nought for a bossC
But a broken down squatter like meE
-
For the banks are all broken they sayC
And the merchants are all up a treeE
When the bigwigs are brought to the Bankruptcy CourtF
What chance for a squatter like meE
-
No more shall we muster the river for fatsC
Or spiel on the Fifteen mile plainG
Or rip through the scrub by the light of the moonH
Or see the old stockyard againI
-
Leave the slip panels down it won't matter much nowJ
There are none but the crows left to seeE
Perching gaunt in yon pine as though longing to dineK
On a broken down squatter like meE
-
When the country was cursed with the drought at its worstL
And the cattle were dying in scoresC
Though down on my luck I kept up my pluckM
Thinking justice might temper the lawsC
But the farce has been played and the Government aidN
Ain't extended to squatters old sonO
When my dollars were spent they doubled the rentP
And resumed the best half of the runO
-
'Twas done without reason for leaving the seasonO
No squatter could stand such a rubQ
For it's useless to squat when the rents are so hotR
That one can't save the price of one's grubQ
And there's not much to choose 'twixt the banks and the JewsC
Once a fellow gets put up a treeE
No odds what I feel there's no court of appealS
For a broken down squatter like meE
