Song Of The Federation Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCE AFAFGHG AIAIJKJ C GLGL MNMN JOJO GPGP AOAO NIN

As the nations sat together grimly waitingA
The fierce and ancient nations battle scarredB
Grown grey in their lusting and their hatingA
Ever armed and ever ready keeping guardB
Through the tumult of their warlike preparationC
And the half stilled clamour of the drumsD
Came a voice crying 'Lo a new made NationC
To her place in the sisterhood she comes 'E
-
And she came She was beautiful as morningA
With the bloom of the roses on her mouthF
Like a young queen lavishly adorningA
Her claims with the splendours of the SouthF
And the fierce old nations looking on herG
Said 'Nay surely she were quickly overthrownH
Hath she strength for the burden laid upon herG
Hath she power to protect and guard her own '-
-
Then she spoke and her voice was clear and ringingA
In the ears of the nations old and greyI
Saying 'Hark and ye shall hear my children singingA
Their war song in countries far awayI
They are strangers to the tumult of the battleJ
They are few but their hearts are very strongK
'Twas but yesterday they called unto the cattleJ
But they now sing Australia's marching song '-
SONG OF THE AUSTRALIANS IN ACTIONC
-
For the honour of Australia our MotherG
Side by side with our kin from over seaL
We have fought and we have tested one anotherG
And enrolled among the brotherhood are weL
-
There was never post of danger but we sought itM
In the fighting through the fire and through the floodN
There was never prize so costly but we bought itM
Though we paid for its purchase with our bloodN
-
Was there any road too rough for us to travelJ
Was there any path too far for us to treadO
You can track us by the blood drops on the gravelJ
On the roads that we milestoned with our deadO
-
And for you O our young and anxious motherG
O'er your great gains keeping watch and wardP
Neither fearing nor despising any otherG
We will hold your possessions with the swordP
-
Then they passed to the place of world long sleepingA
The grey clad figures with their deadO
To the sound of their women softly weepingA
And the Dead March moaning at their headO
-
And the Nations as the grim procession endedN
Whispered 'Child thou has seen the price we payI
From War may we ever be defendedN
Kneel thee down new made Sister Let us Pray '-
