Now this was what Macpherson toldA
While waiting in the standB
A reckless rider over boldA
The only man with hands to holdA
The rushing Rio GrandeB
He said This day I bid good byeC
To bit and bridle reinD
To ditches deep and fences highC
For I have dreamed a dream and IC
Shall never ride againE
-
I dreamt last night I rode this raceF
That I today must rideG
And cantering down to take my placeF
I saw full many an old friend s faceF
Come stealing to my sideG
-
Dead men on horses long since deadH
They clustered on the trackI
The champions of the days long fledH
They moved around with noiseless treadH
Bay chestnut brown and blackI
-
And one man on a big grey steedJ
Rode up and waved his handB
Said he We help a friend in needJ
And we have come to give a leadH
To you and Rio GrandeB
-
For you must give the field the slipK
So never draw the reinD
But keep him moving with the whipK
And if he falter set your lipK
And rouse him up againE
-
But when you reach the big stone wallL
Put down your bridle handB
And let him sail he cannot fallL
But don t you interfere at allL
You trust old Rio GrandeB
-
We started and in front we showedM
The big horse running freeN
Right fearlessly and game he strodeM
And by my side those dead men rodeM
Whom no one else could seeN
-
As silently as flies a birdO
They rode on either handB
At every fence I plainly heardO
The phantom leader give the wordO
Make room for Rio GrandeB
-
I spurred him on to get the leadH
n I chanced full many a fallL
But swifter still each phantom steedJ
Kept with me and at racing speedJ
We reached the big stone wallL
-
And there the phantoms on each sideG
Drew in and blocked his leapP
Make room make room I loudly criedG
But right in front they seemed to rideG
I cursed them in my sleepP
-
He never flinched he faced it gameQ
He struck it with his chestR
And every stone burst out in flameQ
And Rio Grande and I becameQ
Phantoms among the restR
-
And then I woke and for a spaceF
All nerveless did I seemS
For I have ridden many a raceF
But never one at such a paceF
As in that fearful dreamS
-
And I am sure as man can beN
That out upon the trackI
Those phantoms that men cannot seeN
Are waiting now to ride with meN
And I shall not come backI
-
For I must ride the dead men s raceF
And follow their commandB
Twere worse than death the foul disgraceF
If I should fear to take my placeF
Today on Rio GrandeB
-
He mounted and a jest he threwT
With never sign of gloomU
But all who heard the story knewT
That Jack Macpherson brave and trueT
Was going to his doomU
-
They started and the big black steedJ
Came flashing past the standB
All single handed in the leadH
He strode along at racing speedJ
The mighty Rio GrandeB
-
But on his ribs the whalebone stungV
A madness sure it seemedW
And soon it rose on every tongueV
That Jack Macpherson rode amongV
The creatures he had dreamedW
-
He looked to left and looked to rightX
As though men rode besideG
And Rio Grande with foam flecks whiteX
Raced at his jumps in headlong flightX
And cleared them in his strideG
-
But when they reached the big stone wallL
Down went the bridle handB
And loud we heard Macpherson callL
Make room or half the field will fallL
Make room for Rio GrandeB
-
He s down he s down And horse and manY
Lay quiet side by sideG
No need the pallid face to scanY
We knew with Rio Grande he ranY
The race the dead men rideG
