A Tragedy as Played at RydeA
Macbreath Mr HenleyB
Macpuff Mr TerryB
The GhostA
-
ACT IC
-
TIME The day before the electionD
SCENE A Drummoyne tram running past a lunatic asylumE
All present are Reform Leaguers and supporters of MacbreathF
They seat themselves in the compartmentA
-
MACBREATH Here I'll sit in the midstA
Be large in mirth Anon we'll all be fittedA
With Parliamentary seatsG
Voter approaches the doorH
There's blood upon thy faceI
-
VOTER 'Tis Thompsons's thenJ
-
MACBREATH Is he thrown out How neatly we beguiledA
The guileless Thompson Did he sign a pledge agreeing to retireK
-
VOTER Aye that he didA
-
MACBREATH Not so did IC
Not on the doubtful hazard of a voteA
By Ryde electors cherry pickers oafsI
That drive their market carts at dread of nightA
And sleep all day Not on the jaundiced choiceI
Of folks who daily run their half a mileL
Just after breakfast when the steamer hootsI
Her warning to the laggard not on theseI
Relied Macbreath for if these rustics' choiceI
Had fall'n on Thompson I should still have claimedA
A conference But hold Is Thompson outA
-
VOTER My lord his name is mud That I did for himM
I paid my shilling and I cast my voteA
-
MACBREATH Thou art the best of all the shilling votersI
Prithee be near me on election dayA
To see me smite Macpuff and now we shan'tB
Be longN
Ghost of Thompson appearsI
What's this A visionD
Thou canst not say I did it Never shakeO
Thy gory locks at me Run for some other seatA
Let the woods hide thee Prithee chase thyselfP
The ghost of Thompson disappears and Macbreath revives himselfP
with a great effortA
Leaguers allQ
Mine own especial comrades of ReformR
All amateurs and no professionalsI
So many worthy candidates I seeB
Alas that there are only ninety seatsI
Still let us take them all and Joe CarruthersI
Ashton and Jimmy Hogue and all the restA
Will have to look for work Oh joyous dayA
To morrow's poll will make me M L AS
-
ACT IIC
-
TIME Election dayA
SCENE Macbreath's committee roomsI
-
MACBREATH Bring me no more reports let them all flyC
Till Labour's platform to Kyabram comeE
I cannot taint with fear How go the votesI
-
Enter first voterT
-
FIRST VOTER May it please my LordA
The cherry pickers' vote is two to oneD
Towards Macpuff and all our voters sayA
The ghost of Thompson sits in every boothF
And talks of pledgesI
-
MACBREATH What a polished liarT
And yet the dead can vote Strikes himM
What if it should beB
Ghost of Thompson appears to him suddenlyB
-
GHOST The Pledge The PledgeU
-
MACBREATH I say I never signed the gory pledgeU
Ghost disappears Enter a MessengerT
Thou com'st to use thy tongue Thy story quicklyB
-
MESSENGER Gracious my LordA
I should report that which I know I sawI
But know not how to do itA
-
MACBREATH Well say onV
-
MESSENGER As I did stand my watch in ParliamentA
I saw the Labour platform come acrossI
And join Kyabram Loans were overthrownW
The numbers were reduced extravaganceI
Is put an end to by McGowan's voteA
-
MACBREATH The devil damn thee black thou cream faced loonX
Where got'st thou this fish yarnY
-
MESSENGER There's nearly fortyB
-
MACBREATH Thieves foolZ
-
MESSENGER No members will be frozen out of workA2
-
MACBREATH Aye runs the story so Well well 'tis suddenD
These are the uses of the politicianD
A few brief sittings and another contestA
He hardly gets to know th' billiard tablesI
Before he's outA
-
Alarums and Harbour excursions enter MacpuffP
at the head of a Picnic PartyB
-
MACPUFF Now yield thee tyrantA
By that fourth party which I once did formR
I'll take thee to a picnic there to liveP
On windfall orangesI
-
MACBREATH Nay rather deathF
Death before picnic Lay on MacpuffP
And damned be he who first cries Hold enoughP
They fight Macbreath is struck on the back of the headA
by some blue metal from Pennant Hills Quarry He falls The refereeB
counts 'One two three eight nine ten out '-
-
MACPUFF Kind voters all and worthy gentlemenB2
Who rallied to my flag today and made meB
Member for Thompson from my soul I thank youC2
There needs no trumpet blast for I can blowD2
Like any trombone Prithee let us goD2
Thanks to you all who shared this glorious dayA
Whom I invite to dance at Chowder BayA
