Rhyme Scheme: ABAABCBCCCB DBDDB EBEEB FGFFG CBCCB HBHHB IBIIB FBFFB JBJJBThe grey gull sat on a floating whale | A |
On a floating whale sat he | B |
And he told his tale of the storm and the gale | A |
And the ships that he saw with steam and sail | A |
As he flew by the Northern Sea | B |
I have seen a sign that is strange and new | C |
That I never before did see | B |
A flying ship that roared as it flew | C |
The storm and the tempest driving through | C |
It carried a flag and it carried a crew | C |
Now what would that be said he | B |
- | |
And the flag was a Jack with stars displayed | D |
A flag that is new to me | B |
For it does not ply in the Northern trade | D |
But it drove through the storm wrack unafraid | D |
Now what is that flag said he | B |
- | |
I have seen that flag that is starred with white | E |
Said a southern gull said he | B |
And saw it fly in a bloody fight | E |
When the raider Emden turned in flight | E |
And crashed on the Cocos lee | B |
- | |
And who are these folk whose flag is first | F |
Of all the flags that fly | G |
To dare the storm and the fog accurst | F |
Of the great North Sea where the bergs are nursed | F |
And the Northern Lights ride high | G |
- | |
The Australian folk said a lone sea mew | C |
The Australian flag said he | B |
It is strange that a folk that is far and few | C |
Should fly their flag where there never flew | C |
Another flag said he | B |
- | |
I have followed their flag in the fields of France | H |
With its white stars flying free | B |
And no misfortune and no mischance | H |
Could turn them back from their line of advance | H |
Or the line that they held said he | B |
- | |
Whenever there's ever rule to break | I |
Wherever they oughtn't to be | B |
With a death to dare and a risk to take | I |
A track to find or a way to make | I |
You will find them there said he | B |
- | |
They come from a land that is parched with thirst | F |
An inland land said he | B |
On risk and danger their breed is nursed | F |
And thus it happens their flag is first | F |
To fly in the Northern Sea | B |
- | |
Though Hawker perished he overcame | J |
The risks of the storm and the sea | B |
And his name shall be written in stars of flame | J |
On the topmost walls of the Temple of Fame | J |
For the rest of the world to see | B |
