The daylight is dyingA
Away in the westB
The wild birds are flyingA
in silence to restB
In leafage and frondageC
Where shadows are deepD
They pass to its bondageC
The kingdom of sleepD
And watched in their sleepingA
By stars in the heightE
They rest in your keepingA
O wonderful nightE
When night doth her gloriesF
Of starshine unfoldG
'Tis then that the storiesF
Of bush land are toldG
-
Unnumbered I told themH
In memories brightE
But who could unfold themH
Or read them arightE
Beyond all denialsI
The stars in their gloriesF
The breeze in the myallsF
Are part of these storiesF
-
The waving of grassesF
The song of the riverJ
That sings as it passesF
For ever and everJ
The hobble chains' rattleK
The calling of birdsF
The lowing of cattleK
Must blend with the wordsF
-
Without these indeed youL
Would find it ere longM
As though I should read youL
The words of a songM
That lamely would lingerJ
When lacking the runeN
The voice of a singerJ
The lilt of the tuneN
-
But as one halk bearingA
An old time refrainO
With memory clearingA
Recalls it againP
These tales roughly wrought ofQ
The Bush and its waysF
May call back a thought ofQ
The wandering daysF
And blending with eachR
In the memories that throngM
There haply shall reachR
You some echo of songM
