They came from the lower levelsA
Deep down in the Brilliant mineB
From the wastes where the whirlwind revelsA
Whirling the leaves of pineB
On the western plains where the Darling flowsC
And the dust storms wheel and shiftD
The teamster loosened his yokes and bowsE
And turned his team adriftD
-
On the western stations far and wideF
There's many an empty penG
For the quot ringers quot have cast the machines asideF
And answered the call for menG
-
On the lucerne flats where the stream runs slowH
And the Hunter finds the seaI
The women are driving the mowers nowJ
With the children at their kneeI
-
For the men have gone as a man must goH
At the call of the rolling drumsK
For the men have sworn that the Turks shall knowH
When the old battalion comesK
-
Column of companies by the rightL
Steady in strong arrayM
With the sun on the bayonets gleaming brightL
The battalion marched awayM
-
They battled the old battalionN
Through the toil of the training campsO
Sweated and strove at lecturesP
By the light of the stinking lampsO
-
Marching shooting and drillingQ
Steady and slow and sternR
Awkward and strange but willingQ
All of their job to learnR
-
Learning to use the rifleS
Learning to use the spadeT
Deeming fatigue a trifleS
During each long paradeT
-
Till at last they weldedU
Into a concrete wholeV
And there grew in the old battalionN
A kind of battalion's soulV
-
Brotherhood never was like itW
Friendship is not the wordX
But deep in that body of marching menG
The soul of a nation stirredX
-
And like one man with a single thoughtY
Cheery and confidentZ
Ready for all that the future broughtY
The old battalion wentA2
-
Column of companies by the rightL
Steady in strong arrayM
With the sun on the bayonets gleaming brightL
The battalion marched awayM
-
How shall we tell of the landingQ
By the hills where the foe were spreadB2
And the track of the old battalionN
Was marked by the Turkish deadB2
-
With the dash that discipline teachesC2
Though the hail of the shrapnel flewD2
And the forts were raking the beachesC2
And the toll of the dead men grewD2
-
They fixed their grip on the gaunt hillsideF
With a pluck that has won them fameE2
And the home folks know that the dead men diedF
For the pride of Australia's nameE2
-
Column of companies by the rightL
To the beat of the rolling drumsK
With honours gained in a stirring fightL
The old battalion comesK
