OUT in the wastes of the West countrieA
Out where the white stars shineB
Grim and silent as such men beC
Rideth a man with a historyC
Anthony ConsidineB
For the ways of men they are manifoldD
As their differing views in lifeE
Some sell themselves for the lust of goldD
And some for the lust of strifeE
But this man counted the world well lostF
For the love of his neighbour s wifeE
-
They fled together as those must fleeC
Whom all men hold in blameG
Each to the other must all things beC
Who cross the gulf of iniquityC
And live in the land of shameG
-
But a light o love if she sins with oneH
She sinneth with ninety nineB
The rule holds good since the world begunH
Since ever the streams began to runH
And the stars began to shineB
The rule holds still and he found it trueA
Anthony ConsidineB
-
A nobler spirit had turned in scornI
From a love that was stained with mireA
A weaker being might mourn and mournI
For the loss of his Heart s DesireA
But the anger of Anthony ConsidineB
Blazed up like a gaming fireA
-
And she with her new love presentlyC
Came past with her eyes ashineB
And Gad so willed it and God knows whyJ
She turned and laughed as they passed hire byJ
Anthony ConsidineB
-
Her laughter stung as a whip might stingK
And mad with his wounded prideL
He turned and sprang with a panther s springK
And struck at his rival s sideL
And only the woman shudderingK
Could tell how the dead man diedL
-
-
She dared not speak and the mysteryC
Is buried in auld lang syneB
But out on the wastes of the West countrieC
Grim and silent as such men beC
Rideth a man with a historyC
Anthony ConsidineB
