Bring me a quart of colonial beerA
And some doughy damper to make good cheerA
I must make a heavy dinnerB
Heavily dine and heavily supC
Of indigestible things fill upC
Next month they run the Melbourne CupC
And I have to dream the winnerB
Stoke it in boys the half cooked hamD
The rich ragout and the charming chamD
I've got to mix my liquorB
Give me a gander's gaunt hind legE
Hard and tough as a wooden pegE
And I'll keep it down with a hard boiled eggE
'Twill make me dream the quickerB
-
Now that I'm full of fearful feedF
Oh but I'll dream of a winner indeedF
In my restless troubled slumberB
While the night mares race through my heated brainG
And their devil riders spur amainG
The trip for the Cup will reward my painG
And I'll spot the winning numberB
-
Thousands and thousands and thousands moreH
Like sands on the white Pacific shoreH
The crowding people clusterB
For evermore is the story oldI
While races are bought and backers are soldI
Drawn by the greed of the gain of goldI
In their thousands still they musterB
-
-
-
And the bookies' cries grow fierce and hotJ
'I'll lay the Cup The double if not '-
'Five monkeys Little John sir '-
'Here's fives bar one I lay I lay '-
And so they shout through the livelong dayK
And stick to the game that is sure to payK
While fools put money on sirB
-
And now in my dream I seem to goL
And bet with a 'book' that I seem to knowL
A Hebrew money lenderB
A million to five is the price I getM
Not bad but before I book the betM
The horse's name I clean forgretM
Its number and even genderB
-
Now for the start and here they comeN
And the hoof strokes roar like a mighty drumN
Beat by a hand unsteadyM
They come like a rushing roaring floodM
Hurrah for the speed of the Chester bloodM
For Acme is making the pace so goodM
They are some of 'em done alreadyM
-
But round the track she begins to tireB
And a mighty shout goes up 'Crossfire '-
The magpie jacket's leadingO
And Crossfire challenges fierce and boldM
And the lead she'll have and the lead she'll holdM
But at length gives way to the black and goldM
Which right to the front is speedingO
-
Carry them on and keep it upC
A flying race is the Melbourne CupC
You must race and stay to win itM
And old Commotion Victoria's prideM
Now takes the lead with his raking strideM
And a mighty roar goes far and wideM
'There's only Commotion in it '-
-
But one draws out from the beaten ruckP
And up on the rails by a piece of luckP
He comes in a style that's cleverB
'It's Trident Trident Hurrah for Hales '-
'Go at 'em now while their courage fails '-
'Trident Trident for New South Wales '-
'The blue and white for ever '-
-
Under the whip with the ears flat backQ
Under the whip though the sinews crackQ
No sign of the base white featherB
Stick to it now for your breeding's sakeR
Stick to it now though your hearts should breakR
While the yells and roars make the grand stand shakeR
They come down the straignt togetherB
-
Trident slowly forges aheadM
The fierce whips cut and the spurs are redM
The pace is undiminishedM
Now for the Panics that never failS
But many a backer's face grows paleS
As old Commotion swings his tailS
And swerves and the Cup is finishedM
-
-
-
And now in my dream it all comes backQ
I bet my coin on the Sydney crackQ
A million I've won no questionG
'Give me my money you hook nosed hogT
Give me my money bookmaking dog '-
But he disappeared in a kind of fogT
And I woke with 'the indigestion'G
