Now the new chum loaded his three nought threeA
It's a small bore gun but his hopes were bigB
I am fed to the teeth with old ewe said heA
And I might be able to shoot a pigB
And he trusted more to his nose than earC
To give him warning when pigs were nearD
-
Out of his lair in the lignum darkE
Where the wild duck nests and the bilbie digsF
With a whoof and a snort and a kind of barkE
There rose the father of all the pigsF
And a tiger would have walked wide of himG
As he stropped his tusks on a leaning limbG
-
Then the new chum's three nought three gave tongueH
Like a popgun fired in an opera bouffeI
But a pig that was old when the world was youngH
Is near as possible bullet proofI
The more you shoot him the less he diesJ
Unless you catch him between the eyesJ
-
So the new chum saw it was up to himG
To become extinct if he stopped to shootK
So he made a leap for a gidgee limbG
While the tusker narrowly missed his bootK
Then he found a fork where he swayed in airL
As he gripped the boughs like a native bearL
-
The pig sat silent and gaunt and grimG
To wait and wait till his foe should fallM
For night and day were the same to himG
And home was any old place at allM
I must wait said he till this sportsman dropsN
I could use his boots for a pair of stropsN
-
The crows that watch from the distant blueO
Came down to see what it all might meanP
An eaglehawk and a cockatooO
Bestowed their patronage on the sceneP
Till a far off boundary rider saidQ
I must have a look there is something deadQ
-
Now the new chum sits at his Christmas fareL
Of a dried up chop from a tough old eweO
Says he It's better than native bearL
And nearly as tender as kangarooO
An emu's egg I can masticateQ
But pork says he is the thing I hateQ
