The Squatter's Man Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AAABCCCB DDDEFFFE GGGE HHHE IIIEAAAE JKJLMMNO PQQE RRSE TTTEHUHECome all ye lads an' list to me | A |
That's left your homes an' crossed the sea | A |
To try your fortune bound or free | A |
All in this golden land | B |
For twelve long months I had to pace | C |
Humping my swag with a cadging face | C |
Sleeping in the bush like the sable race | C |
As in my song you'll understand | B |
- | |
Unto this country I did come | D |
A regular out and out new chum | D |
I then abhorred the sight of rum | D |
Teetotal was my plan | E |
But soon I learned to wet one eye | F |
Misfortune oft times made me sigh | F |
To raise fresh funds I was forced to fly | F |
And be a squatter's man | E |
- | |
Soon at a station I appeared | G |
I saw the squatter with his beard | G |
And up to him I boldly steered | G |
With my swag and billy can | E |
- | |
I said Kind sir I want a job | H |
Said he Do you know how to snob | H |
Or can you break in a bucking cob | H |
Whilst my figure he well did scan | E |
- | |
'Tis now I want a useful cove | I |
To stop at home and not to rove | I |
The scamps go about a regular drove | I |
I 'spose you're one of the clan | E |
But I'll give ten ten sugar an' tea | A |
Ten bob a week if you'll suit me | A |
And very soon I hope you'll be | A |
A handy squatter's man | E |
- | |
At daylight you must milk the cows | J |
Make butter cheese an' feed the sows | K |
Put on the kettle the cook arouse | J |
And clean the family shoes | L |
The stable an' sheep yard clean out | M |
And always answer when we shout | M |
With 'Yes ma'am ' and 'No sir ' mind your mouth | N |
And my youngsters don't abuse | O |
- | |
You must fetch wood an' water bake an' boil | P |
Act as butcher when we kill | Q |
The corn an' taters you must hill | Q |
Keep the garden spick and span | E |
- | |
You must not scruple in the rain | R |
To take to market all the grain | R |
Be sure you come sober back again | S |
To be a squatter's man | E |
- | |
He sent me to an old bark hut | T |
Inhabited by a greyhound slut | T |
Who put her fangs through my poor fut | T |
And snarling off she ran | E |
So once more I'm looking for a job | H |
Without a copper in my fob | U |
With Ben Hall or Gardiner I'd rather rob | H |
Than be a squatter's man | E |
