With eyes that searched in the darkA
Peering along the lineB
Stood the grim Scotsman Hector ClarkA
Driver of Forty nineB
And the veldt fire flamed on the hills aheadC
Like a blood red beacon signB
-
There was word of a fight to the northD
And a column too hardly pressedE
So they started the Highlanders forthD
Heedless of food or restE
-
But the pipers gaily playedF
Chanting their fierce delightG
And the armoured carriages rocked and swayedF
Laden with men of the Scots BrigadeF
Hurrying up to the fightG
And the grim grey Highland engineerH
Driving them into the nightG
-
Then a signal light glowed redC
And a picket came to the trackI
Enemy holding the line aheadC
Three of our mates we have left for deadC
Only we two got backI
And far to the north through the still night airJ
They heard the rifles crackI
-
And the boom of a gun rang outK
Like the sound of a deep appealL
And the picket stood in doubtK
By the side of the driving wheelL
-
But the engineer looked downM
With his hand on the starting barN
Ride ye back to the townM
Ye know what my orders areN
Maybe they're wanting the Scots BrigadeF
Up on those hills afarN
-
I am no soldier at allO
Only an engineerH
But I could not bear that the folk should sayP
Over in Scotland Glasgow wayP
That Hector Clark stayed hereQ
With the Scots Brigade till the foe was goneR
With ever a rail to run her onS
Ready behind Stand clearH
-
Fireman get you goneR
Into the armoured trainT
I will drive her aloneU
One more trip and perhaps the lastV
With a well raked fire and an open blastV
Hark to the rifles againW
-
-
-
On through the choking darkA
Never a lamp nor a lightG
Never an engine sparkA
Showing her hurried flightG
Over the lonely plainT
Rushed the great armoured trainT
Hurrying up to the fightG
-
Then with her living freightX
On to the foe she cameY
And the rides snapped their hateX
And the darkness spouted flameY
-
Over the roar of the frayP
The hungry bullets whinedX
As she dashed through the foe that layP
Loading and firing blindX
Till the glare of the furnace burning clearH
Showed them the form of the engineerH
-
Sharply and well definedX
Through They are safely throughZ
Hark to the column's cheerH
Surely the driver knewZ
He was to halt her hereQ
But he took no heed of the signals redX
And the fireman found when he climbed aheadX
There on the door of his engine deadX
