The Road To Old Man's Town Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCCD EFEF GDGGD

The fields of youth are filled with flowersA
The wine of youth is strongB
What need have we to count the hoursA
The summer days are longB
-
But soon we find to our dismayC
That we are drifting downD
The barren slopes that fall awayC
Towards the foothills grim and greyC
That lead to Old Man's TownD
-
And marching with us on the trackE
Full many friends we findF
We see them looking sadly backE
For those who've dropped behindF
-
But God forfend a fate so dreadG
Alone to travel downD
The dreary toad we all must treadG
With faltering steps and whitening headG
The road to Old Man's TownD
