Now look you see it's this way likeA
You cross the broken bridgeB
And run the crick down till you strikeA
The second right hand ridgeB
-
The track is hard to see in partsC
But still it's pretty clearD
There's been two Injun hawkers' cartsC
Along that road this yearD
-
Well run that right hand ridge alongE
It ain't to say too steepF
There's two fresh tracks might put you wrongE
Where blokes went out with sheepF
-
But keep the crick upon your rightG
And follow pretty straightH
Along the spur until you sightG
A wire and sapling gateH
-
Well that's where Hogan's old grey mareI
Fell off and broke her backJ
You'll see her carcass layin' thereI
Jist down below the trackJ
-
And then you drop two mile or threeK
It's pretty steep and blindL
You want to go and fall a treeK
And tie it on behindL
-
And then you pass a broken cartM
Below a granite bluffN
And that is where you strike the partM
They reckon pretty toughN
-
But by the time you've got that farO
It's either cure or killP
So turn your horses round the spurQ
And face them up the hillP
-
For look if you should miss the slopeR
And get below the trackJ
You haven't got the slightest hopeR
Of ever gettin' backJ
-
An' half way up you'll see the hideS
Of Hogan's brindled bullT
Well mind and keep the right hand sideS
The left's too steep a pullT
-
And both the banks is full of cracksU
An' just about as darkV
You'll see the last year's bullock tracksU
Where Hogan drew the barkV
-
The marks is old and pretty faintW
O'ergrown with scrub and suchX
Of course the track to Hogan's ain'tW
A road that's travelled muchX
-
But turn and run the tracks alongE
For half a mile or moreY
And then of course you can't go wrongE
You're right at Hogan's doorY
-
When first you come to Hogan's gateH
He mightn't show perhapsZ
He's pretty sure to plant and waitH
To see it ain't the trapsZ
-
I wouldn't call it good enoughN
To let your horses outA2
There's some that's pretty extra roughN
Is livin' round aboutA2
-
It's likely if your horses didB2
Get feedin' near the trackJ
It's going to cost at least a quidB2
Or more to get them backJ
-
So if you find they're off the placeC2
It's up to you to goD2
And flash a quid in Hogan's faceC2
He'll know the blokes that knowD2
-
But listen if you're feelin' dryE2
Just see there's no one nearD
And go and wink the other eyeE2
And ask for ginger beerD
-
The blokes come in from near and farO
To sample Hogan's popF2
They reckon once they breast the barO
They stay there till they dropF2
-
On Sundays you can see them spreadG2
Like flies around the tapH2
It's like that song The Livin' DeadG2
Up there at Hogan's GapH2
-
They like to make it pretty strongE
Whenever there's a chanceI2
So when a stranger comes alongE
They always hold a danceI2
-
There's recitations songs and fightsJ2
A willin' lot you'll meetK2
There's one long bloke up there recitesJ2
I'll tell you he's a treatK2
-
They're lively blokes all right up thereI
It's never dull a dayL2
I'd go meself if I could spareI
The time to get awayL2
-
-
-
The stranger turned his horses quickM2
He didn't cross the bridgeB
He didn't go along the crickM2
To strike the second ridgeB
-
He didn't make the trip becauseN2
He wasn't feeling fitO2
His business up at Hogan's wasP2
To serve him with a writO2
-
He reckoned if he faced the pullT
And climbed the rocky stairI
The next to come might find his hideS
A landmark on the mountain sideS
Along with Hogan's brindled bullT
And Hogan's old grey mareI
